Augsburg competing at NCAA D-III National Championships this weekend

Fourteen-time national champion Augsburg University will compete at the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 15-16, at the La Crosse Center in La Crosse, Wis.

Action begins at 11 a.m. (Central time) on Friday with preliminary rounds, followed by quarterfinal and wrestleback action at 6 p.m., which will determine the eight All-Americans in each weight class. On Saturday, action continues at 10 a.m. with championship semifinals, consolation action, and placing matches for third, fifth, and seventh places. Parade of All-Americans will be at 6:30 p.m., with the ten national championship matches scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

AUGSBURG’S ALL-AMERICAN TRADITION — Depth has always been a hallmark of the Augsburg men’s wrestling program, and that has shown in the number of All-Americans — finishers in the top eight of each weight class — that the team has had in national competition. Augsburg has earned at least two All-Americans every year since 1988 and has had at least five All-Americans in 30 of the last 35 years. Augsburg has had at least one All-American in national competition every year since 1977 — 47 straight years. Augsburg has now earned 275 wrestling All-Americans in program history (224 in NCAA competition, 38 in NAIA, 13 by the NWCA in 2020 and 2021).

AUGGIES WIN REGIONAL TITLE, QUALIFY 10 WRESTLERS TO NATIONALS — The only school in the country to qualify individuals in all ten weight classes to the national championships, Augsburg claimed its 21st straight NCAA regional title, winning the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional on March 1-2 in Stevens Point, Wis. Augsburg won the 19-team regional with 216.5 points. Augsburg has won the team title in its NCAA regional every year since starting regional competition in the 2002-03 season.

For the fifth time since the 2002-03 season, Augsburg qualified wrestlers in all ten weight classes to the NCAA Division III National Championships. Augsburg has had seven or more national tournament qualifiers in 20 of the last 21 seasons. The last three times Augsburg has had ten national qualifiers, it has won the team national title (2004-05, 2006-07 and 2014-15). Augsburg also had ten qualifiers in 2002-03, where it finished second nationally.

Three Auggies — 141-pound defending national champion Sam Stuhl (SR, Ellsworth, Wis./Ellsworth HS), 184-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) and 285-pounder Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) — won regional titles. Kim won his third straight regional title, while Stuhl and Schwanebeck-Ostermann each won their first regional titles. Schwanebeck-Ostermann was named the regional’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
