Minnesota Wraps Up Season Saturday at NCAAs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 2023-24 college wrestling season concluded Saturday morning for Minnesota with a pair of placement matches at the NCAA Championships in Kansas City, Mo.

Senior Isaiah Salazar finished in sixth place, while redshirt sophomore Vance VomBaur earned eighth place at 141 pounds. Both claimed All-America honors for the first time in their respective careers on Friday.

Salazar started his day with a 3-2 loss to No. 9 Bennett Berge of South Dakota State in the consolation semifinals. Salazar trailed 3-1 after the opening period and scored an escape in the second to cut the deficit to one, but he couldn’t crack the scoreboard in the third to drop to the fifth-place match.

It was a rematch of the Big Ten finals when Salazar faced No. 6 Bernie Truax of Penn State in the fifth-place match. Salazar got the better of Truax earlier in the month to win the conference title, but it was Truax’s day Saturday as he recorded a 12-0 major decision.

Salazar wraps up the season with a 24-4 record, including a streak of 18 straight wins from early December to Friday’s semifinals at NCAAs. He’s the fifth Minnesota individual to earn All-America honors at 184 pounds and it’s the 10th such honor for a Golden Gopher.

In his first year in the Minnesota starting lineup, VomBaur earned an eighth-place finish at NCAAs. Facing the No. 4 seed in North Carolina State’s Ryan Jack, VomBaur, seeded 26th, dropped a 4-3 decision. Jack led 3-1 after the first period only to see VomBaur ride him for nearly the entire second period. VomBaur recorded an escape of his own early in the third and added a point for riding time but it wasn’t enough to make up the difference.

VomBaur finishes the year with a record of 19-11 after going 3-3 at the NCAA Championships. He’s the 11th All-American in Gophers history at 141 pounds and the eighth individual to do so at Minnesota.
