MSUM Closes Season at NCAA Super Region V

MINOT, N.D. – MSU Moorhead was led by wins from redshirt freshmen Cody Wienen and Wayne Mellon at the NCAA Super Region V Tournament.

Cody Wienen helped lift the Dragons in the morning sessions, earning a first-round bye at 157 pounds. While Wienen would fall in his first match of the day to Northern State’s Devin Bahr, he would rally in the consolation bracket. Wienen earned an 8-1 decision over Sioux Falls’ John Tyler to collect a win at the regional. The redshirt freshman would miss out on vying for third place with a loss in his next match.

Wayne Mellon would also get the Dragons a win in the consolation ladder. Mellon would dazzle at 174 pounds against USF’s Ashtin Johnson, winning by a count of 17-0 by the end of the second period. Mellon would conclude his tournament with a loss in his next match.

Hunter Hayes would close out his Dragon career by narrowly missing an advancement in the 141-pound consolation bracket. Hayes fought hard against Minnesota State’s Trayton Anderson but would eventually fall by decision 7-2. Gunnar Mogen nearly advanced in the 149-pound consolation ladder after a first-round loss. Mogen went toe-to-toe with Mary’s Kaden Renner with the match turning into a shootout. Mogen would rack up 15 points in the match, but it was not enough to overcome Renner, who scored 17 in the bout.
