Northland finishes 12th at NJCAA Women’s Wrestling Invitational

Council Bluffs, Iowa – The Northland women’s wrestling team finished 15th in an 18-team field at the 2024 NJCAA Women’s Wrestling Invitational, held Friday and Saturday, March 1-2 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluff’s Iowa.

Northland freshman Arionna Beatty entered the tournament as the number five seed at 143 pounds and a favorite to reach the medal stand. Beatty battled a stomach virus the day before the tournament, and it was unclear if she would be able to wrestle. On Friday morning, Beatty made the decision to compete despite being less than 100 percent. She pinned Mira Marchio of Joliet in 1:00 in the round of 16 to set up a quarterfinal showdown against fourth-seeded Eve Herlyn of Southeast Community College.

Herlyn and Beatty were ranked number one and two, respectively, in The Open Mat rankings prior to the tournament. Unfortunately, it became apparent early that Beatty was not capable of producing her best effort, with Herlyn dominating the match and winning by 11-1 technical fall. Herlyn went on to win the championship at 143. Beatty, meanwhile, lost by 10-0 technical fall to eventual fourth place finisher Nevaeh Leonard of Southeast.

Also competing for the Pioneers were Shelby Sherman at 143 and Madelyn Gallant at 155 pounds. Sherman lost by fall to Princess Altsisi of Iowa Central and by 10-0 technical fall to Attalia Cano of Umqua. Gallant lost by fall to Genesis Gillmore of Indian Hills in the opening round and 10-0 technical fall to sidnee Busch of Southeast.
