Seven Jackrabbits honored by NWCA

MANHEIM, Pa. — Seven South Dakota State wrestling student-athletes have been honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association as recipients of an NCAA Division I Men’s Scholar All-America Award.

A total of 338 scholar-athletes from 78 institutions were recognized for their achievements both on the mat and in the classroom. SDSU’s honorees included:

  • Bennett Berge, R-Fr., Mantorville, Minnesota;
  • Derrick Cardinal, So., Forest Lake, Minnesota;
  • Clay Carlson, Grad., Willmar, Minnesota;
  • Cade DeVos, Sr., Altoona, Iowa;
  • Daniel Kimball, Sr., Buckingham, Iowa
  • Tanner Sloan, Grad., Alburnett, Iowa, and
  • Cael Swensen, So., Plymouth, Minnesota.

To qualify for NWCA Scholar All-America honors, wrestlers must have met one of the following criteria:

  • 3.0 cumulative GPA and earned All-America honors in the same academic year
  • 3.2 cumulative GPA and an NCAA tournament qualifier in the same academic year
  • 3.5 cumulative GPA and been a participant at the conference qualifying tournament

Carlson and DeVos were each honored for the fourth time in their collegiate careers, while Cardinal, Sloan and Swensen all received recognition for the second time. Six of SDSU’s honorees were NCAA qualifiers this past season, with Berge, DeVos and Sloan wrestling their way to All-America accolades.
