Herbst Named a NWCA Scholar All-American

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University freshman Owen Herbst (Buffalo, Minn.) was named a 2023-24 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American on Wednesday, April 10.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of at least 3.20 (cumulative or last academic year), have a .500 match record or better, and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships; place in the top eight at the NCAA regional and wrestle in 50 percent of the scheduled dates; or achieve a .665 winning percentage or better and wrestle in 50 percent of the scheduled dates to be eligible for Scholar All-America distinction.

SJU has now produced 30 Scholar All-Americans over the last 16 seasons.

A global business leadership major, Herbst posted an 11-4 record at 174 pounds in his first season as a Johnnie. The mark included a 2-2 record and eighth-place finish at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional in March. Herbst recorded the fastest pin in school history – eight seconds – Jan. 27 in the Johnnies’ 44-6 win over Minnesota West C.T.C.
