Makem earns 3rd NWCA Scholar All-American honor

MINNEAPOLIS — For the third straight year, Augsburg University women’s wrestler Nina Makem (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American honors for her performances in the classroom and on the wrestling mat, it was announced recently.

Makem, an exercise science major with a 3.51 GPA, earned her third career All-American honor with an eighth-place finish at 155 pounds at the National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships for NCAA-affiliated schools, finishing 28-4 with 12 pins and nine technical falls. Makem is now Augsburg’s all-time winningest women’s wrestler, with an 84-16 career record, with 23 pins and a school-record 43 technical falls. Her 23 pins are third-most in Augsburg women’s wrestling history. She finished fifth at 136 pounds in the 2023 NCWWC national meet and second at 136 pounds in 2022.

Since the women’s wrestling program was established in the 2019-20 season, Augsburg has produced 31 NWCA Scholar All-Americans.

Under first-year head coach Ali Sprenger, Augsburg finished the 2023-24 season with a 19th-place finish at the NCWWC national meet, and a fifth-place finish in NCWWC regional competition. The Auggies finished 1-5 in dual meets this season.
