Gophers Add Cooper Flynn to Roster

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota wrestling head coach Brandon Eggum announced the signing of transfer Cooper Flynn Wednesday.

Flynn joins the Minnesota roster after three years competing at 125 pounds at Virginia Tech where he posted a 42-15 overall record, including 12-3 in duals.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Cooper Flynn to Minnesota Wrestling,” Eggum said. “His talent is undeniable, but it’s his character and dedication that truly set him apart. Cooper embodies everything we look for in an athlete – hardworking, resilient, and committed to excellence. We’re confident he’ll make a significant impact both on and off the mat and will be a great fit for our team culture.”

A native of Seymour, Tenn., Flynn entered this past season as a redshirt sophomore with the intention of taking an Olympic redshirt, but an injury elsewhere on the roster resulted in him joining the Hokies lineup in December. He proceeded to post three top-five wins, an appearance in the ACC Championship finals, and his first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships, where he was 1-2. Flynn went 15-6 on the year, including a 9-1 mark in duals and 5-2 in the ACC.

He was a two-time ACC Wrestler of the Week this past season, first on Dec. 20 when he knocked off the No. 4 wrestler in the country and then later on Jan. 9 after he posted a pair of top-12 victories.

As a redshirt freshman in 2022-23, Flynn was 14-6 overall and 3-2 in duals, including a major decision win in his dual debut. He won an individual title at the Purple Raider Open and was a finalist at both the Southeast Open and Keystone Classic.

It was after the 2023 campaign that Flynn won the U23 Freestyle Nationals and qualified for the Olympic Trials, prompting the initial plans for an Olympic redshirt.

Flynn competed in five tournaments as a true freshman during the 2021-22 campaign, where he was 13-3. He won titles at the Dave Lehman Open and Wolfpack Open and was a finalist at the Southeast Open.

Gophers Add Cooper Flynn

A four-year letterwinner, Flynn competed at The McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Md. He was a two-time Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association champion and added a third appearance in the finals. Flynn was named the 2021 Maryland Wrestler of the Year and was a 2020 Super 32 champion. FloWrestling ranked him as the No. 3 recruit at 126 pounds and 22nd overall in the 2021 class.

In addition to his high school accomplishments, Flynn was also a three-time placer at Fargo, a 2020 prep national champion, a 2019 Walsh Ironman finalist, and he earned a third-place finish at the Beast of the East.

Flynn becomes the third Gophers transfer of the offseason, joining Tommy Askey and Clayton Whiting. The team is also set to welcome eight freshmen for the 2024-25 season.
