MSUM Wrestling Adds Caden Steffen to Coaching Staff

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead head wrestling coach Kris Nelson has announced the hiring of multi-time All-American Caden Steffen to the Dragon coaching staff. Steffen will serve as an assistant coach, focusing his work on the roster’s upper-weight classes.

“We are excited to have Caden Steffen join our staff,” said Nelson. “He will help with all aspects of the Dragon wrestling program and be especially beneficial to the team’s upper-weight wrestlers.”

Steffen most recently concluded a historic career at Southwest Minnesota State this past winter. He was a stalwart for the Mustangs at 197 pounds last season, earning an 18-4 ledger in 2023-24, including a 9-0 dual record. His prowess on the mat guided him to a berth at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships this past season. Steffen was ranked as high as number three in the nation at the weight class during the year. In 2022-23, Steffen would gather a 16-2 overall record at 184 pounds, garnering the number two ranking at the weight class during the season.

The Zumbrota, Minn., native was a two-time All-American in 2021-22 and 2020-21. In 2021-22, Steffen placed sixth at the national tournament to earn the distinction while also collecting a Super Region V championship at 184 pounds. He completed the season with an overall record of 22-4 and was ranked as high as fourth in the country. In 2020-21, Steffen would earn a fifth-place finish to collect All-American status and would conclude the year with an 11-5 record.

Prior to his career at Southwest Minnesota State, Steffen initially committed to wrestle for the University of Minnesota, where he accrued 36 victories for the Gophers in open tournaments. Steffen was a two-time Minnesota state champion as an individual at Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School and was also a member of two state championship teams during his prep career.

Steffen has a Dragon connection through his sister, Avery, who plays softball for the Dragons.
