Swensen finishes second at U23 Nationals

GENEVA, Ohio —South Dakota State wrestler Cael Swensen recorded a runner-up finish in the 74-kilogram division in freestyle competition over the weekend at the 2024 U23 Nationals held at SPIRE Institute.

A native of Plymouth, Minnesota, and a two-time NCAA qualifier, the fourth-seeded Swensen moved into the championship round with five consecutive victories during competition on Saturday. After winning his first four matches by a combined total of 40-0, Swensen knocked off top-seeded Matthew Bianchi of the Arkansas Regional Training Centers, 3-2, in semifinal action.

That set a best-of-three series Sunday against Hunter Garvin of Iowa, in which the second-seeded Garvin recorded a sweep by claiming the first bout, 10-9, followed by a 14-1 (VSU1) victory in 2 minutes and 45 seconds.

Marcus Espinoza-Owens also put together a strong run in the 74-kg division by compiling a 6-2 record over the two days of competition.

Kail Wynia contributed a 6-2 record en route to a fourth-place finish at 125 kg, and Thomas Dineen added a fourth-place finish in the U20 World Team Trials at 97 kilograms.

Derrick Cardinal (61 kg) and Brock Fettig (86 kilograms) turned in 4-2 records in their respective U23 freestyle divisions.
