New Coach to Lead Albert Lea Wrestling Program

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Albert Lea Area Schools has hired Preston Nelson as the new head wrestling coach and health/physical education teacher, the district announced Tuesday.

Nelson, a native of Adrian, Minnesota, joins Albert Lea after serving three years as an assistant coach at Sioux Valley High School in Volga, South Dakota, while completing his college degree.

“I’ve been fortunate to learn from some of the best—starting with my dad—and I’m excited to bring that same level of commitment, energy, and high standards to this program,” Nelson said.

Wrestling runs deep in Nelson’s family. He grew up under the guidance of his father, Gregg Nelson, the longtime head wrestling coach at Adrian High School. As a competitor, Preston Nelson advanced to the state tournament in his senior year.

His coaching philosophy emphasizes individual development, mental toughness and team culture. Nelson said he plans to build a program focused on discipline and continuous improvement.

“Wrestling has shaped who I am. It’s more than a sport; it’s a way of life,” he said.

District officials expressed optimism that Nelson’s leadership will energize the program and inspire a new generation of Tigers.
