RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Apple Valley High School wrestler Cassandra Gonzales bounced back from her only loss of the tournament to capture gold at the U17 Pan American Championships on Friday, helping the United States sweep all 10 women’s freestyle titles.
Gonzales, who competes for MN Elite Wrestling Club, finished with a 3-1 record in the 69-kilogram division’s round-robin format. Her lone defeat came against Brazil’s Mayara Neper Oliveira Santos, 5-4, but the Minnesota native responded with dominant victories to claim the championship.
The Apple Valley wrestler opened her tournament with a 42-second pin of Argentina’s Sofia Bazan, then suffered her only setback to the Brazilian. Gonzales regrouped to pin Mexico’s Linda Martinez Armenta in 54 seconds before closing out the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall over Canada’s Khushleen Jhalli.
Gonzales was one of 10 American women to capture gold medals as Team USA posted a perfect 250-point team score. Mexico finished second with 147 points, followed by Venezuela with 119.
The U.S. women compiled a dominant 35-1 combined record, with 21 victories by pin and 13 by technical fall. Gonzales’ loss to the Brazilian was the team’s only defeat of the tournament.
Natalie Radecki of Newark, Delaware, earned the tournament’s Golden Boot Award as the outstanding wrestler after winning the 43-kilogram title with five victories, including three technical falls and two pins.
Two U17 World champions also dominated their respective divisions. Morgan Turner went 3-0 at 49 kilograms with two pins and a technical fall, while Tania Fernandez posted a 4-0 record at 61 kilograms with three pins and one technical fall.
