Semifinal matchups set at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Wrestling in State College

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The preliminary rounds of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Wrestling set a mean pace for what’s expected to be a tremendous two-day tournament here at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Friday’s opening session, which included the first-round and quarterfinal matches, featured current high-schoolers and young college stars beating their Senior-level peers and pushing world team members and Olympic medalists. It included a couple of surprising semifinal runs and some dominant performances by true contenders.

Pat Smith Set for 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Wrestling

MINNEAPOLIS – Former Gopher wrestler Pat Smith is set to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Wrestling this weekend with eyes on the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics later this summer.

The two-day event runs Friday and Saturday at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, Pa. Action begins Friday morning at 9 a.m. CT with the Challenge Tournament preliminaries, quarterfinals and consolation rounds. The semifinals and finals take place Friday night beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Saturday features the final best-of-three championship series starting at 9 a.m. CT and continuing at 5:30 p.m. Peacock and USA Network will provide streaming and linear coverage, while TrackWrestling will have live results.

Mavericks Earn Post-Season NWCA Scholar All-American Accolades

Mankato, Minn. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced the 2024 NCAA Division II Scholar All-American rankings, with Minnesota State ranked fourth overall with a GPA of 3.438. The Mavericks are the highest-ranking team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), with six other teams on the list.

The NWCA Scholar All-American status is granted to a student athlete with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale who has competed in a minimum of four competitions. Seven Minnesota State wrestlers were named Scholar All-Americans, including three Mavericks who earned the award for the second year in a row.

Andrew Weiss, a freshman from Holmen, Wis., was one of two freshmen named and is majoring in mechanical engineering. Makota Misgen joined Weiss on the list of freshmen being recognized. Misgen, at 285lbs., hails from Ellendale, Minn., along with majoring in criminal justice.

Augsburg’s Nina Makem 2nd at 68kg at U23 National Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. — Augsburg University women’s wrestler Nina Makem (JR, Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) finished second in the Under-23 division 68-kilogram (150 pounds) weight class at the USA Wrestling/U.S. Marine Corps Women’s National Championships, held over the weekend.

Makem reached the finals in the 68 kg class with three victories, including a 10-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals and 46-second pin in the semifinals, then faced former Augsburg women’s wrestler Brooklyn Hays in the best-of-three finals, with the winner securing a spot in the 2024 U23 Pan American Championships team for the June championships in Colombia.

Makem won the first bout by a 3-2 decision, but lost in a 5:12 pin in the second match and in a 3:49 pin in the deciding match to Hays, who was an All-American for the Auggies with a sixth-place finish at 170 pounds at the 2023 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships for NCAA-affiliated schools.

Augsburg has 20 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, 6th in D-III academic national standings

MINNEAPOLIS — Claiming a school-record 20 individual Scholar All-Americans, the most among NCAA Division III teams nationally, the 2024 NCAA Division III national champion Augsburg University men’s wrestling team finished in sixth place in the 2023-24 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III academic team race, with a team grade-point average of 3.725, it was announced recently. All 10 NCAA Division III national tournament qualifiers for the Auggies earned Scholar All-American honors this season.

Pre-seeds released for U.S. Olympic Team Trials Wrestling

The USA Wrestling National Coaching Staff has finalized the pre-seeds for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the respective disciplines ahead of this week’s much-anticipated event in State College, Pa.

There are 13 athletes who sit out to the best-of-three Championship Finals Series (based upon specific criteria) and six athletes who advance to the semifinals of the Challenge Tournament based upon winning a 2023 World medal in a non-Olympic weight class.

Seeding criteria considered in building these seeds include the USA Wrestling Performance Index (PIN), head-to-head results, common opponents, and tournament placements at national and international events.

Tommy Askey to Join Gopher Wrestling Program

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota wrestling has added transfer Tommy Askey to the program, head coach Brandon Eggum announced Monday.

A native of Pine Bush, N.Y., Askey spent the past four seasons at Appalachian State, where he was a two-time SoCon champion and automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships at 157 pounds. He finished with a record of 74-35 for the Mountaineers, including an unbeaten 15-0 mark in league duals the past two seasons, and was a two-time all-conference honoree.

“Tommy brings a fierce determination and a style perfectly suited for Minnesota Wrestling,” Eggum said. “His passion for the sport and eagerness to compete against the best are exactly what we look for in our athletes. We are excited to welcome him as a Golden Gopher.”
