Merritt to be inducted into the St. Cloud State Athletics Hall of Fame

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Tad Merritt, a four-time NCAA All-American in wrestling, will be inducted into the St. Cloud State Athletics Hall of Fame as part of its 2025 class. The university announced the nine individuals and one team selected for induction on Wednesday.

Merritt, who competed for the Huskies from 2008-12, never finished lower than fifth nationally at 165 pounds. He secured third-place finishes in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and a fifth-place finish in 2010.

A two-time regional champion (2011-12) and the 2009 NSIC Rookie of the Year, Merritt’s consistent success was instrumental in St. Cloud State’s wrestling program achieving back-to-back runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championships in 2011 and 2012. These were the program’s best national finishes at the time and began a streak of 14 consecutive top-six national finishes, which remains active.

Merritt earned All-NSIC honors in each of his four seasons and was a three-time recipient of the Dean Weisman Wrestler of the Year award, presented annually to the program’s top wrestler. He holds several notable program records, ranking second in career pins (63), dual wins in a season (19), and career wins (144).

The 2025 Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Saturday, Oct. 4, with ceremony details to be announced later.
