Challengers threaten Apple Valley, Simley domination

A changing of the guard in Class 3A and Class 2A might be in store when the state high school wrestling tournament begins a three-day run Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Xcel Energy Center.

For the first time in many years, Apple Valley and Simley are not favored to win in their respective classes. Apple Valley, the eight-time defending big-school champion, is seeded second behind St. Michael-Albertville. Simley, winner of the past five Class 2A titles, is the No. 2 behind Kasson-Mantorville. MOORHEAD, Minn. – Finding enough motivation to fuel his ambitious wrestling dreams has never been a problem for Josten Coleman, but in this, his senior season at Concordia College, his emotional circuits could approach overload. He continues to bring his usual amount of emotion and dedication to the sport, and this winter he has added incentive as well.

Injured senior’s sacrifice helps Spuds to state team berth

Moorhead – In the week leading up to the Class 3A, Section 8 team wrestling tournament Feb. 16, Moorhead senior wrestler AJ Wheeler – ranked third in the state at 182 pounds by the website The Guillotine at the time – felt a pop and a snap in his right knee in practice.
