Gophers open as preseason favorites

Minnesota is ranked No. 1 after finishing second to Penn State at last year’s NCAA championships.

Tony Nelson flexed his biceps as the heavyweight champion of college wrestling last March, but he and his Gophers teammates had to watch as Penn State ran away with the team title.

Minnesota finished second to Penn State at the NCAA championships, but it carries the No. 1 ranking into this season, according to the USA Today poll. They shoulder equally lofty goals.

Post-Bulletin: RCTC season preview

Season outlook: Coach Randy Rager expects a strong season with a good group of experienced returners mixed with a very talented pool of freshmen. The Yellowjackets also added a couple of transfers.

RCTC returns five national qualifiers in Dillon Solberg (133 pounds), Nate Larson (141), Holton Lubinski  (149), Logan Barrett  (184) and Jake Minske (197). Minske, a Mayo grad, cut weight and drops down to 197 after wrestling at heavyweight a year ago. “His size and athletic ability will make him exciting to watch this season,” Rager said. Continue reading at postbulletin.com

Augustana continues open competition at Dakota Wesleyan

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No.16-ranked Augustana wrestling team continues action in open competition on Saturday at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D.

Augustana placed seven wrestlers at the Daktronics Open last week, including second-place finishes by TJ North (125 pounds) Nate Herda (149 pounds) and Sean Derry (197 pounds). Herda is currently ranked fourth in the country at 149 pounds. Continue reading
