Auggies’ Johnson advances to national title match tonight

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Augsburg College heavyweight Chad Johnson (SO, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) will have a chance to defend his NCAA Division III national title, as he scored a semifinal win on Saturday morning at the NCAA Division III National Championships at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Johnson advanced to the national championship match with a 6-2 victory over James Buss of Loras (Iowa) in the semifinals on Saturday morning. Johnson claimed two takedowns and built a 2:01 riding-time advantage to score the win. He will face Joseph Zitone of Centenary (N.J.) in the finals, which start at 7 p.m. Johnson faced Zitone on Jan. 12 at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals, with Johnson claiming a 6-3 win. Cobber’s Long and Bouressa Survive To Earn All-American Honors

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Concordia wrestlers Jake Long and Tom Bouressa survived the long first day of the NCAA National Meet and earned All-American honors. Both wrestlers won their first match, lost in the quarterfinals and rallied to win their first consolation match to advance to the final 8 in their weight class.

For Long it is his first-ever All-American honor while Bouressa picks up his second All-American award in the past three years.

Augsburg claims 3 All-Americans, sits in 9th place in team race

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Claiming three All-Americans, the Augsburg College wrestling team moved into ninth place after the first day of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Leading the way for the Auggies was defending heavyweight national champion Chad Johnson (JR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS), who earned his third All-American honor of his career with two victories on Friday. Johnson opened with a 4:25 pin of Nick Pearch of Luther (Iowa), then claimed a 10-3 win over Tom Foote of Williams (Mass.) in the championship quarterfinals.

Fans Can Witness Live Team USA Simulation Matches in Des Moines

Every year, USA Wrestling and the NCAA work together to provide fans at the NCAA Wrestling Championships a chance to see America’s top Olympic-caliber athletes as part of the NCAA Fan Festival.

This year, there will be a new twist to this popular spectator opportunity. On Friday, March 22, fans can witness live Team USA simulation matches during an open practice at approximately 2:15 p.m. at the NCAA Fan Festival in Des Moines, Iowa. This session is conveniently scheduled between sessions of the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
