Seven Ridgewater Warriors Qualify for NJCAA Wrestling Nationals

WILLMAR and HUTCHINSON, MN — Seven Ridgewater Warrior wrestlers are headed to nationals this week for the March 1-2 wrestling championships in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They qualified at the February 19 Division III Region 13 Tournament in Rochester.

Sophomore Cole Holien, from Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City High School, defended his 141-pound regional championship honor by winning his bracket. At 157 pounds, freshman Taedon Nichols (Siren, WI) also won his bracket to become a regional champ, as did Tucker Hugg (St. Cloud, Granite City Baptist Academy) at 285 pounds.

Sophomore Ross Meskimen (Ramsey) took second in the 184-pound competition.

Sparks Takes Title at Patriots Last Chance Open

MINNEAPOLIS — In one final tuneup before the Big Ten Championships, March 9-10, Gophers senior Andrew Sparks took home the title at the Patriots Last Chance Open in Fairfax, Va., Sunday.

Sparks and redshirt junior Sam Skillings both competed at 174 pounds for Minnesota, with Sparks taking home the title with a 3-0 record, while Skillings was second with a 2-1 mark.

SDSU closes dual season with Border Bell win

South Dakota State received pins from Tanner Cook and Bennett Berge as part of a seven-match winning streak to send its senior class and Frost Arena off in style with a 34-6 wrestling dual victory over North Dakota State before a crowd of 2,241 Sunday afternoon.

In retaining the Border Bell traveling trophy, the 11th-ranked Jackrabbits closed out the dual portion of their schedule with a 13-4 overall record, including a 7-2 mark against Big 12 Conference opponents. NDSU dropped to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in the Big 12.

Tanner Jordan opened the dual with a 13-0 major decision over Ryan Henningson, in which the SDSU wrestler racked up more than four minutes in riding time. The 14th-ranked Jordan scored on a takedown and four-point near-fall for a 7-0 first-period lead, adding a reversal in the second period and another takedown in the final stanza.

UW Parkside Downs Maverick In Regular Season Finale

KENOSHA, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin Parkside won eight of ten matches – five of which came with bonus points – en route to a 33-6 victory of Minnesota State Friday evening in the final regular season dual of the season for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State picked up its first win of the dual at 165 pounds when sophomore Kole Marko earned a 4-1 sudden victory win. Marko and the Ranger’s Brady Schuh traded escapes in the second and third periods before Marko registered a takedown in overtime to secure the victory.

Southwest Minnesota State 30, University of Sioux Falls 20

Mustangs overcome early deficit to take down Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs defeated the University of Sioux Falls Cougars on Thursday evening by a final score of 30-20. This win brings the Mustangs to 4-7 overall and 2-7 in the NSIC, while the loss drops the Cougars to 2-12 overall and 0-9 in the NSIC.

The dual began with a pair of forfeits, with Jacob Dykes winning by forfeit at 285, while USF won 125 by forfeit.

133 pounds saw USF’s Beau Klingensmith win by technical fall and USF’s Beau Beavers won at 141 by fall.
