OREM, Utah – The North Dakota State wrestling team improved to 3-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference with a 24-18 win over Utah Valley Friday, Feb. 10.

No. 14 Josh Wilson of Utah Valley gave the home side an early lead with a first period pin of Mark Erickson at 149 pounds. The lead was quickly erased as No. 13 Steven Monk responded with a pin of his own at 157 pounds. Monk downed Napoleon Aniciete in 3 minutes 51 seconds.

Strong Start Sparks Mavericks over Marauders

Bismark, N.D. — Minnesota State didn’t lose a match until 184-lb en route to a 21-9 win in conference dual action. In the marquee match of the night at 149-lb, junior Jesse Westphal defeated No. 2 Trevor Johnson in a 7-4 decision.

Sophomore David Demo got the Mavericks on the board early defeating Hunter Menendez in a 16-1 tech fall. Senior Brian Reisenauer followed up the tech fall with a 5-3 decision win of his own over Kyle Larson. Both teams were open at 141-lb resulting in a double forfeit.

Southwest Minnesota State University 17, Concordia 16

Mustangs hang on for 17-16 dual victory over No. 18 Concordia

MARSHALL, Minn. – Concordia College (Moorhead), ranked 18th in the nation in Division III, won the last four weight classes, but Southwest Minnesota State was able to hang on for a 17-16 dual victory on Friday night in Marshall.

SMSU improves to 9-5 on the season, its highest win total since the 2002-03 season. Jacob Begin won his 11th straight bout picking up a 15-2 decision at 165 pounds. SMSU improves to 6-0 in home duals on the season, dropping the Cobbers to 7-11 overall on the season.
