Weber Extends Win Streak to Nine as NDSU Wrestling Wraps Up Regular Season

BROOKINGS, S.D. – North Dakota State senior 165-pounder Luke Weber won his eighth and ninth straight matches as the Bison wrestling team closed out its regular-season schedule Saturday, Feb. 20, with the Last Chance Challenge inside Frost Arena. There was no team scoring.

Competitors from NDSU and South Dakota State wrestled 41 matches in the round-robin event, which served as a final tune-up for the teams’ starting lineups two weeks ahead of the Big 12 Championships and provided extra matches for reserves who did not have the benefit of open tournaments due to COVID-19.

Weber, who hasn’t lost since Jan. 10, picked up a 4-1 victory by decision over SDSU’s Kenny O’Neil and won by fall over Dalton Lakmann in 2 minutes, 7 seconds. Weber improved his record to a team-best 10-2 overall with four pins.

Auggies win 20 of 26 matches against the Yellowjackets

MINNEAPOLIS — Winning 20 of 26 bouts, including 14 by bonus-point margins, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team dominated in a non-scored dual meet against Rochester Community and Technical College on Friday evening at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg, winners of the most recent NCAA Division III national title in 2019, had 19 wrestlers compete in 26 bouts on Friday. Of the 19 wrestlers, 14 were first-years and sophomores. The Auggies claimed six pins, four technical falls, four major decisions and a forfeit among their 20 victories over the Yellowjackets, the 2020 National Junior College Athletic Association national champions.

SDSU ends dual season on high note

South Dakota State closed out the dual portion of its wrestling schedule Saturday by defeating Utah Valley, 22-11, at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits improved to 5-6 overall in duals and 2-5 against Big 12 opponents. UVU fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big 12.

SDSU wrestlers rallied to win several close matches in the closing seconds in the early going, building a 15-0 lead in the front half of the dual. Danny Vega started the string of comeback victories, taking down Kase Mauger with about five seconds remaining for a 4-3 victory in the 125-pound matchup.

Franek, Pentz Lift NDSU Wrestling to Pair of Wins in Brookings

BROOKINGS, S.D. – No. 15-ranked Jared Franek won both matches at 157 pounds, including the first pin of his career, to help the North Dakota State wrestling team defeat Air Force 28-19 and Utah Valley 25-12 on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Frost Arena.

NDSU freshman 197 Owen Pentz added the second and third pins of his career to clinch both victories for the Bison, who finished their dual meet schedule with a 7-3 overall record and 5-2 against Big 12 Conference opponents.

Franek, the sophomore from West Fargo, N.D., won his first match of the day 8-2 over Air Force’s Parker Simington. It was one of six NDSU victories against Air Force including a first-period pin at 165 pounds by Luke Weber.

Minnesota 27 Wisconsin 7

No. 10 Gophers Take Down No. 20 Wisconsin, 27-7, in Madison

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 10 Gopher wrestling team (6-2) won eight of 10 matches in a 27-7 win at No. 20 Wisconsin on Friday morning. Minnesota has won four duals in a row, while extending its win streak over the Badgers to nine.

Top-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson continued his run through the regular season with his eighth straight win with bonus points. He pinned the Badgers’ Pete Christensen in 3:20 to improve to 8-0 and 58-2 in his career. His 25-match win streak ranks 20th in program history and is five shy of his own career best.

No. 1 Huskies dominate en route to 10th NSIC Title

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – Domination: the exercise of control or influence over someone or something; the state of being so controlled.

Aka: the St. Cloud State University wrestling team.

The Huskies exercised control in almost every way possible Thursday evening, as they dominated the No. 19 Upper Iowa University Peacocks in their 33-6 win. The victory secured yet another perfect regular season for No. 1 ranked St. Cloud State (5-0, 5-0 NSIC) and clinched the team’s tenth consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Regular Season Title, an accolade the Huskies shared with Northern State University this season.
