gg22-allarEpisode 22 of The Guillotine Grapevine visits with Class 3A Rankings Editor John Nalan as we preview the 30th annual Minnesota Christmas Tournament.

While 3A teams are set to do some damage in Rochester, there’s also nine out-of-state teams coming into this year’s Christmas Tournament. Nalan previews the event in the December 9 issue of The Guillotine, but we also break down the fun things about this event, how it can signify the season truly is here in Minnesota and even what some people like to have as a pre-tournament meal.

We’ll also showcase the Milestones from Minnesota wrestling at the end of the show.

The Guillotine Grapevine: Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions Inductions from October 22, 2016

Episode 20 of The Guillotine Grapevine was recorded at the Christensen Center at Augsburg College on Saturday, October 22. The night marked the seventh annual Alan and Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions induction ceremonies.

Jason Bryant, host of this program, served as the Master of Ceremonies and welcomed Leadership Award winner Joe DeMeo, inductees Lindsey Durlacher and Jim and Dave Hazewinkel and Legacy Award winners, the Minnesota Storm, into the Hall.

This episode is that night’s program, including opening remarks from Minnesota Storm founder and Hall namesake Alan Rice. Also included are speeches from Dan Gable, Scott Benson, Michael Durlacher, Jim Hazewinkel, Dave Hazewinkel and Pat Marcy.

The Guillotine Grapevine: Two-time Cadet World Champion Gable Steveson of Apple Valley

g-steveWe kick off the second season of The Guillotine Grapevine by heading down to Apple Valley and talking with two-time Cadet world champion Gable Steveson.

Already a two-time state champion and three-time state finalist, Steveson brings an impressive 128-3 record into his junior year for the Eagles. Having clinched a state dual championship with his performance as a freshman, Steveson is fine with pressure and takes every match the same.

Steveson talks about settling in Minnesota, why he’s striving to be the best and of course, growing up wrestling with a name like Gable Dan Steveson.

GG18: Ready, Willing and Gable to talk wrestling – Minnesota native Chas Betts on life as the WWE’s Chad Gable

betts-gableIn 2012, Chas Betts represented the United States on the Greco-Roman Olympic Team in London. Four years later, Betts, now known professionally as WWE Superstar Chad Gable, is one of the rising stars in the world of professional wrestling.

The Albertville, Minn., native was a Greco-Roman specialist, foregoing the traditional college wrestling route to train strictly in Greco at Northern Michigan under Ivan Ivanov at the U.S. Olympic Education Center. From there, it was a World Team in 2009, an Olympic Team in 2012 and now a career tag-teaming with another former amateur wrestler, Jason Jordan (known to college fans as Indiana alum Nathan Everhart).

GG17: Schoolboy Duals Team Leader John Thorn on Minnesota’s double titles in Indianapolis

gg-sbEpisode 17 of The Guillotine Grapevine visits with John Thorn, the team leader for the Schoolboy Duals for Team Minnesota.

Two teams in each style traveled to Indianapolis and each style would be won by a team from the Land of 10,000 wrestlers.

Thorn talks about the formulation of the team, his background in the sport, individual successes and the organizational excellence seen within the Minnesota USA Wrestling chapter that contributed to the strong network able to put together a strong team. Thorn also breaks down the training camps and staff used to coach the teams to a pair of championships.

GG16: Jake Clark and Alan Rice host German wrestlers in Minnesota

gg-16Episode 16 of The Guillotine Grapevine heads over to Augsburg College as two-time U.S. World Team member Jake Clark ran some visiting German wrestlers through a short practice. There’s a tie with the Germans and why they’re here in Minnesota training for a week and it’s not necessarily what you might think.

The Germans also had an opportunity to talk with Olympic wrestler and coach Alan Rice as he joined the practice in the wrestling room named in his honor. We also catch up with German coach Marcel Fornoff and Anthony Sanders. It’s Sanders’ father who is a Minnesota native and former St. Cloud State wrestler.

They’ll work out at PINnacle and Takedown up in Brainerd before heading back.
