Mark Hall named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn./Minnesota Elite) has been named Wrestler of the Week.

Each week, will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.

Hall led the Minnesota Elite to the team title at the National Scholastic Duals on Saturday at Wabash College in Crawsfordsville, Ind. Continue reading at

2014 LAS VEGAS: Senior Open Men’s freestyle preview

Believe it or not, we are just a little over two years away from another Olympic Games. So, top American wrestlers are trying to make their mark and establish momentum as we move closer to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 2013 season was highlighted by the success of Jordan Burroughs, who captured his second straight World title after winning a gold medal in between those titles at the 2012 Olympics in London. Burroughs was the lone U.S. medalist in freestyle wrestling at the 2013 Worlds, so American wrestlers obviously are looking to improve on that performance this year.

Burroughs had his U.S. record of 69 straight international victories snapped in a loss to fellow American Nick Marable earlier this year at the Yasar Dogu International in Turkey. Burroughs, a two-time U.S. Open champion, bounced back to place third in Turkey. He then dominated the competition in going 5-0 at the World Cup in March in Los Angeles. Team USA handles Georgia at Dream Team Classic

Minnesota’s Gross and Rose both win

MARIETTA, Ga. — On Sunday afternoon, Team USA handled Georgia, 37-15, at the 2014 Wrestling USA/Cliff Keen Dream Team Classic held at Lassiter High School in Marietta Ga.

Team USA won nine of the 13 matches. However, Team Georgia had two of the highlight victories in the dual meet, both coming from Collins Hill wrestlers. At 120, No. 3 Sean Russell topped No. 5 Scott Parker (Pennridge, Pa.), 5-2. At 126, No. 7 Ryan Millhoff edged No. 3 Zeke Moisey (Bethlehem Catholic, Pa.), 5-3. Anchoring Team USA’s victory was a pin from No. 11 Billy Miller at 285 pounds, and four major decision victories, including the one earned by No. 2 Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) in the featured match of the dual meet at 182 pounds. 2014 LAS VEGAS: Senior Open Greco-Roman preview

A new era of Greco-Roman wrestling is upon us as new weight classes and rules have been implemented into the sport, creating the most exciting form of Greco-Roman to date.

Eight weight classes will now be contested in Greco-Roman at the 2014 U.S. Open held in Las Vegas, Nev. These eight weight classes will be substantially higher than their freestyle counterparts, allowing competitors to be bigger and stronger than ever before.

One interesting dynamic to this particular competition is seeing who will emerge victorious as competitors will shuffle due to the new weight classes. The speculation of who will compete where will finally be answered this weekend in Las Vegas. Continue reading at
