St. Cloud State’s Austin Goergen named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

St. Cloud State University redshirt sophomore Austin Goergen (Caledonia, Minn./Caledonia Area H.S.) has been selected as this week’s Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week, for the week of Jan. 5-11, 2015.

Goergen charted a 4-0 record at the 2015 NWCA National Duals on Jan. 9-10 in Fort Wayne, Ind. Goergen helped guide the Huskies to a third place finish, which included a 25-13 win over Fort Hays State, a 22-17 win over No. 4 Ouachita Baptist and a 26-6 win over No. 17 Upper Iowa in the third place bout.

Iowa takes over top spot in WIN’s Dual Team Rankings

NEWTON, Iowa —The University of Iowa — coming off its most impressive win over traditional rival Oklahoma State in 20 years — has taken over the top spot in WIN’s Dual Team ratings and has inched closer to topping Minnesota in WIN’s Jan. 12 Tournament Power Index (TPI), presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

The Hawkeyes won eight bouts to defeat the Cowboys, 30-7, in Stillwater, Okla., on Jan. 11 to improve to 8-0 on the season. That is the same record owned by Minnesota, which rallied to beat both Michigan (20-19) and Rutgers (23-12) last weekend. The two Big Ten rivals are scheduled to meet, Jan. 30, in Minneapolis. Two coaching legends trying to rebuild Eden Prairie wrestling

Eden Prairie got a pair of big-name coaches to sign on to help build a state-caliber wrestling program.

Sitting matside on a folding chair, the 63-year-old head coach, owner of a lofty spot in the national record books, cups his hands around his mouth and barks out encouragement to wrestlers still getting accustomed to a winning environment.

Pacing behind the bench is an unpaid assistant who just happens to have won more team championships that any coach in state history.

And the man who hired both of them is likely the most well-known high school coach in Minnesota. Continue reading at
