NJCAA championships set for Rochester beginning February 24

The 2012 NJCAA Wrestling Championships takes place Friday, Feb. 24th and concludes on Saturday, Feb. 25th at the UCR Regional Sports Center in Rochester, Minn., with 268 wrestlers from 43 two-year colleges across the country competing for both team and individual honors. The tournament returns to Rochester after rotating to both Spokane, Wash., and Des Moines, Iowa the previous two years. This season marks the 13th time the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission has hosted the NJCAA Wrestling Championships.

2012 MWCA All-State Academic Wrestling Team Named

“We strive to find excellent students who also happen to be excellent wrestlers,” said Dean Jennissen, MWCA All-State Academic Chairperson. The 2012 edition of the MWCA (Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association) All-State Academic Team definitely fits this description. This year’s team consists of 28 student-athletes with a combined GPA of 3.76. In fact this group’s had over half of the team with over a 3.90 GPA and the team’s combined GPA is the highest of the teams selected over the past eight years.

Minnesota wins National Duals title

An Oklahoma State alum won the National Duals wrestling title … but it wasn’t the guy who coaches the Cowboys, John Smith. Nor did the much-anticipated rematch of Oklahoma State and Iowa take place.

Instead, Sunday at Gallagher-Iba Arena was the day of the Gophers. No. 3 Minnesota first topped the No. 4 Hawkeyes in a 16-15 semifinal thriller, and then downed the host Cowboys — the top-ranked team in the country — 18-13 for the championship. Continue reading at espn.go.com

Mavs’ Demo Recognized as NSIC Wrestler of the Week for 2-0 Weekend

Burnsville, Minn. — Minnesota State University sophomore 125-lb David Demo has been named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week for a 2-0 weekend announced by conference officials Monday morning. Demo, who now stands at 22-9, is the second consecutive Maverick to earn the award as 149-lb Jesse Westphal garnered the award last week.
