Thomas, Laganiere make college commitments

Two more members of the Kasson-Mantorville wrestling team have committed to Division I schools.

Senior standout and former state champion Nate Thomas gave his verbal commitment recently to the University of Minnesota. Defending state champion (138 pounds) Coltan Laganiere also made his commitment, with the senior headed to Division I South Dakota State. Continue reading at

Olympic Gold Medalist Rulon Gardner to Speak Following Bison Open

FARGO, N.D. – Olympic gold medalist and world champion wrestler Rulon Gardner will speak at the Bison Sports Arena on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. following the 43rd annual Bison Open.

After overcoming numerous obstacles while growing up, Gardner is known for pulling one of the greatest upsets in Olympic wrestling history with his victory over Alexander Karelin in the gold medal round of the 2000 Summer Olympics. Karelin had been previously undefeated in 13 years of international competition.

State champion Nehring to North Dakota State

State champion Grant Nehring of Saint Cloud Apollo has given a verbal commitment to wrestle for North Dakota State following his upcoming senior season.

Nehring is a three-time state placewinner. He won the 138 pound Class AAA state championship as a junior. He placed third at 135 pounds as a sophomore and sixth at 125 pounds as a freshman.

USA Today/NWCA/AWN Preseason Division I Coaches Poll

The Minnesota Golden Gophers will open the 2012-13 season as the nation’s top-ranked team according to the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll.

Coach J Robinson’s team garnered seven of a 10 possible first place votes to start the season No. 1. Last year, the Gophers finished second at the NCAA Division I Championships in St. Louis. The Gophers are led by returning heavyweight champion Tony Nelson and returning runner-up Dylan Ness at 149 pounds. Continue reading at
