Mustangs end open season with four place winners at Dragon Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team concluded its open season today, competing in the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open.

At 133, Chase Hanson began his open with a 10-8 decision victory over Owen Bertram (Concordia-Moorhead) before losing by tech fall to Johnny Colon. In the consolation bracket, Hanson was able to pick up an 11-9 decision victory over Xavier Jones (St. Johns). Hanson placed sixth at 133 pounds.

Wrestling unattached, AJ Polansky lost his first match at 133, but found his rhythm in the consolation bracket, picking up a fall victory over Owen Bertram, an 18-11 decision victory over Shad Cano (MSUM) and a 13-5 major decision victory over Johnny Colon to earn a spot in the third-place match. Polansky lost to Braiden Kort (Augustana) to place fourth at 133.

MSUM Bolsters Three Champions, 10 Placewinners at Dragon Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. – MSU Moorhead wrestling’s Isaiah Huus, Jacob Reinardy and Anthony Sykora all claimed weight class titles at the MSUM-hosted Dragon Open on Sunday.

In total, MSUM bolstered 10 placewinners at the annual meet as 28 different teams competed with over 180 wrestlers taking the mat inside Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Isaiah Huus continued to show why he is one of MSUM’s rising stars, taking home a championship in the 197-pound White Division. Huus collected four more wins to his 2023-24 total at the tournament with two pins and a major decision. The redshirt freshman began his day with back-to-back pinfalls, highlighted by a sticking of Concordia’s Laurore Supris in 59 seconds in the quarterfinals. Huus earned the first-place nod with an 8-2 decision win over Northern State’s Tanner Meyers.

Virginia Holds Off Bison Comeback In Dual

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State wrestling’s comeback against Virginia fell short as the Bison dropped a 21-18 dual to the Cavaliers on Saturday, Dec. 2, inside the Scheels Center.

After the Bison picked up a win from Carlos Negrete Jr. in the opening match, Virginia won the next four matches to take a 15-3 lead. NDSU would secure pins in two of the next three matches and then tied it at 197 pounds before falling in a winner-take-all final.

Negrete scored an early takedown in the 125-pound match and then added a four-point near fall in the third period as he defeated Kyle Montaperto by an 8-2 decision.
