‘U’ Boasts 102 Winter Academic All-Big Ten Honorees

MINNEAPOLIS — The Big Ten Conference bestowed Academic All-Big Ten honors upon 102 University of Minnesota student-athletes on Wednesday as seven Gopher programs were recognized by the conference for academic success.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten merits, student-athletes must be on a varsity team, have been enrolled full time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Dragons earn D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award

CLEVELAND, OH – 87 MSUM Dragons student-athletes, including three wrestlers, have received the Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) Academic Achievement Award. The Academic Achievement Awards, in its 14th year, is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level.

In total, there were a record-breaking 16,262 student-athletes from 188 institutions recognized for the 2020-21 Academic Achievement Awards. This is the most student-athletes being recognized since the inception of the award’s program.

Three Dragon wrestlers are among the honorees – freshman 197-pounder Samuel Grove, sophomore heavyweight Jaden Oestern, and junior 157-pounder Ryan Stenson.

Vos named CoSIDA Academic All-American

LEXINGTON, KY – It was no secret to anyone in the wrestling community that St. Cloud State University’s Garrett Vos (St. Bonifacius, Minn. / Waconia) put together a season to remember in 2020-21. The redshirt junior earned a multitude of postseason honors after an incredible year in which he led the Huskies to their third consecutive national team title. On Thursday, Voss earned one last award, as he was named a First Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Vos, who was named First Team Academic All-District by the organization in early July, is a first-time Academic All-America honoree and becomes the third wrestler to earn the honor in the last five seasons. A criminal justice major, Vos was named to the 2020-21 CoSIDA Division II Academic All-America At-Large Team after maintaining a GPA of 3.66 during the academic year while leading the St. Cloud State to its third straight national title in March. During the team’s historic run, Vos earned his third All-America honor, finishing as the national runner-up at 133-pounds. The redshirt junior additionally posted a 10-1 record during the 2020-21 season and maintained the No. 1 ranking at 133-pounds throughout the regular and postseason.

Bogart Named Academic All-American

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Former Concordia wrestling standout Benjamin Bogart (Alexandria, Minn.) received CoSIDA Academic All-American honors. Bogart was selected to the Division III CoSIDA Academic All-American Second Team in the team “at-large” category.

Bogart becomes the first Cobber student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors since Matthew Lilllehaugen earned the award in track and field in 2017. He is only the second Concordia wrestler to receive the honor. Adam Presler was named CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017.

Bogart was one of only three student-athletes from the MIAC to receive Academic All-American honors in the “at-large” category – and one of only six wrestlers in all of Division III to receive the award.

2021 NCAA Women’s Scholar All-America Awards

Manheim, PA – On Friday, the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced the Scholar All-America Team and Individual honorees for the NCAA Women with awards going to 101 individuals representing 16 institutions.

“On behalf of the NWCA and our Board of Directors, it is my honor to celebrate this incredible list of Scholar All-America teams and individuals from the NCAA Women’s division,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “It is so great to see the growth of this award program which is now in its third year. It’s important to note the incredible overlap between the National Placers and Scholar All-Americans as this is exactly what we want to see.”

In the team race, Adrian College repeated as Team Champions with a 3.743 GPA followed by #2 McKendree (3.720) and #3 King University (3.621). Rounding out the Top Five was #4 Augsburg (3.586) and #5 Gannon (3.573).

Three Johnnies Achieve NWCA Scholar All-America Honors

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Three Saint John’s University wrestling student-athletes received National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-America distinction May 6: Junior Jacob Scherber (Buffalo, Minn.), a biology major (pre-physical therapy emphasis) with a 3.96 GPA; Sophomore Logan Edwards (Prior Lake, Minn.), a theology and psychology double-major with a 3.83 GPA; and Sophomore Carter Entinger (Montrose, Minn./Watertown-Mayer), a physics major (pre-engineering emphasis) with a 3.80 GPA.

SJU has now produced 29 Scholar All-Americans over the last 13 seasons.

Cobbers have Eight NWCA Scholar All-Americans

MOORHEAD, Minn. — Concordia had eight individuals earn National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American honors. Jacob Arends, Tyler Bents, Benjamin Bogart, Connor Chloupek, Kellen Schauer, Alex Skaare, Bret Wilson and Gabe Zierden all received the academic honor handed out by the NWCA.

Schauer, Skaare and Zierden all earn NWCA All-American honors for the second straight season.
