Auggie men’s wrestlers to be honored by state, Twins

MINNEAPOLIS — The 15-time national champion Augsburg University men’s wrestling team will be honored by both the state of Minnesota and the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday (6/18), with a statewide proclamation issued by the governor and a pregame ceremony before Tuesday’s Twins game at Target Field.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan signed a proclamation declaring Tuesday “Augsburg Men’s Wrestling Day” in Minnesota, honoring the Auggies’ 2024 NCAA Division III national championship, the 15th national title in school history and second in a row.

Head coach Tony Valek ’12 will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Tuesday’s Twins game against Tampa Bay, scheduled to start at 6:40 p.m. at Target Field. Valek, his coaching staff and members of the 2023-24 Auggies will be honored on the field prior to Valek throwing out the first pitch. The game takes place during Augsburg’s wrestling team camp, which is taking place this week on the Augsburg campus.

Augsburg has 20 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, 6th in D-III academic national standings

MINNEAPOLIS — Claiming a school-record 20 individual Scholar All-Americans, the most among NCAA Division III teams nationally, the 2024 NCAA Division III national champion Augsburg University men’s wrestling team finished in sixth place in the 2023-24 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III academic team race, with a team grade-point average of 3.725, it was announced recently. All 10 NCAA Division III national tournament qualifiers for the Auggies earned Scholar All-American honors this season.

NWCA Announces the 2024 NCAA Division III Scholar All-American Awards

MANHEIM, PA – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) proudly announces the 2024 NCAA Division III Men’s Scholar All-America awards for Individual and Team recipients. This year, a remarkable total of 418 wrestlers from 100 institutions have achieved the status of Scholar All-American.

Augsburg University leads the nation with an impressive 20 honorees, closely followed by the University of Chicago and the United States Coast Guard Academy, each boasting 14 distinguished recipients. Notable mentions include UW-La Crosse with 13, New York University with 12, Stevens Institute of Technology with 11, and UW-Eau Claire with ten awardees.

In the Team Scholar Awards, Johns Hopkins University takes the top spot with a remarkable GPA of 3.866, closely followed by Heidelberg University’s impressive 3.825. Ohio Northern University secures third place with a GPA of 3.786.

Augsburg wins 15th NCAA D-III national championship

LA CROSSE, Wis. — With two individuals winning national titles and six earning All-American honors, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team claimed its record-tying 15th NCAA Division III national title and second in a row at the national tournament at the La Crosse Center on Saturday.

Augsburg won the national title with 95.0 points, bettering second-place Wartburg (Iowa) with 87.5 points and third-place Wisconsin-La Crosse with 82.5 points. The lead shifted back and forth between the three schools throughout Saturday, with the Auggies clinching the crown after the first of their two individual titles in the evening session.

With its 15th national title, Augsburg has now tied Wartburg for the most NCAA Division III men’s wrestling team titles in tournament history. It’s the first time Augsburg has claimed back-to-back national titles since the 2000-02 championships and 1997 and 1998 championships.

Augsburg’s Blake Jagodzinske named NCAA Elite 90 Award honoree for D-III men’s wrestling

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Augsburg University men’s wrestling student-athlete Blake Jagodzinske (JR, Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West HS) was named as the recipient of the NCAA Elite 90 Award as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average competing at the NCAA Division III Men’s Wrestling National Championships, announced on Saturday.

Jagodzinske is a finance and accounting major with a perfect 4.00 grade-point average. He was presented with the award by J.P. Williams, NCAA Associate Director of Championships and Alliances and tournament director for the NCAA Division III Men’s Wrestling National Championships, prior to the national finals on Saturday evening.

Auggies secure 2 finalists, hold 3-point team lead

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Putting two individuals into national championship matches and recording victories in all four of its consolation placing matches, the Augsburg University men’s wrestling team will take a three-point lead in the team race into the final round of the NCAA Division III National Championships, with the third session completed on Saturday afternoon at the La Crosse Center.

Going into Saturday’s 7 p.m. final session, which features the national title matches in all ten weight classes, Augsburg has 85.5 team points, three ahead of second-place Wartburg (Iowa) with 82.5 points. Both Augsburg and Wartburg have two finalists, while host Wisconsin-La Crosse, with 78.5 points, has four finalists. Johnson & Wales (R.I.), in fourth place with 71.0 points, has two finalists, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire, in fifth place with 65.0 points, has one finalist.

Augsburg has two finalists — top-seeded 197-pounder Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann (SR, Loyal, Wis./Marshfield HS) and No. 3-seeded 285-pounder Tyler Kim (SR, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS). Both four-time All-Americans, it’s the first time Schwanebeck-Ostermann has been in the national finals, while Kim is making his second finals appearance, after finishing second in the National Wrestling Coaches Association tournament in 2021, when the NCAA championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
