Willmar, Waconia, St. Thomas Academy, and West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville are top MWCA Academic Teams

Class AAA Willmar is the top MWCA State Academic Team; Waconia and St. Thomas Academy lead Class AA; and West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville are champs in Class A

Class AAA Academic Champion Willmar had an impressive 3.87 team grade point average to lead all teams that applied for the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches’ Association Team Academic Award in 2016. The next highest grade point average was 3.85 submitted by Waconia and St. Thomas Academy in Class AA. The Class A Champion West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville turned in a 3.69 g.p.a. Congratulations to all four teams.

Gopher Wrestling Hands Out Year-End Awards

Annual banquet wraps up the 2014-15 season and honors the accomplishments of this season’s team

Gopher Wrestling celebrated the 2014-15 season and the careers of its departing seniors on Sunday night at the team’s annual banquet in Minneapolis.

Emceed by Volunteer Assistant Coach Jayson Ness, the banquet included a year-end review from Head Assistant Coach Brandon Eggum, an address about the senior class from Head Coach J Robinson, speeches from 10 senior wrestlers and a collection of team awards presented by the Minnesota coaching staff. A group of six underclassmen also received the once-in-a-lifetime honor of putting on the “M” for the very first time as first-year letterwinners.

Plainview-Elgin-Millville Paces the Entire Field for MWCA State Academic Team Championship

Hastings and Wabasso/Red Rock Central Win Respective Classes

Class AA Academic Champion, Plainview-Elgin-Millville, had an impressive 3.86 team grade point average to lead all 94 teams that applied for the MN Wrestling Coaches’ Association Team Academic Award in 2015. The next highest grade point average was submitted by Hastings. The Class AAA Champion Raiders turned in a 3.82 g.p.a. Wabasso/Red Rock Central was a repeat champion for Class A with 3.80 grade point average. Congratulations to all three teams.

MWCA Names 2015 All-State Academic Wrestling Team

The 2015 edition of the MWCA All-State Academic Wrestling Team is a Senior-dominated group with a combined GPA of 3.48. “The focus of this award is to reward some special young men; student-athletes that can get it done in the classroom and on the mat. These guys certainly represent that ideal very well!” commented Dean Jennissen, MWCA All-State Academic Chairperson.

The 28 member team consists of 24 seniors and four juniors. Two student-athletes carry a perfect 4.0 GPA: Josh Tarum of St. Thomas Academy and Nik Borchert of Mille Lacs. 21 of the 28 wrestlers carry a 3.7 or better GPA. These guys are getting it done in the classroom!
