Dave Arens 1933-2024

Hall of Fame coach Dave Arens passed away on January 19, 2024. He was 90 years old. Arens coached wrestling at Jordan High School from l961 to l968 and Bloomington Kennedy High School from l975 to l984.

While at Bloomington Kennedy, Arens’ teams placed third in state five times and won state titles in l980 and l984. He coached ten individual state champions for The Eagles. In l979, Brad Tufto and Chuck Vavrosky became Kennedy’s first. In l980, Dave’s son, Todd, won a state title. Other state champions and standouts include John Morgan, Dave Wiklund, Chris Lembeck, Danny Collins, Blake Bonjean, Dave Meir, and Marty Morgan, to name a few. Marty Morgan went on to win a DI National Championship and coached with J Robbinson at The University of Minnesota. Lembeck and Gordy Morgan were DI college All-Americans. Brothers Gordy and John Morgan were eventual United States Olympians in Greco-Roman wrestling.

Grams, Scott, Greenhouse set to headline for Kennedy

Kennedy senior Isaac Grams comes into the wrestling season ranked No. 2 at 195 pounds in Class AA with an eye on a third state meet appearance in March. Grams is one of three Eagles to make the rankings, along with sophomore Zach Greenhouse at 113 pounds and junior Mason Scott at 160 pounds.

The trio gives Kennedy a strong shot to compete for hardware in the Metro West Conference and Section 5-AAA.

After a lack of spring, summer, and fall time on the gold and blue mats at the Kennedy Activity center, coach Chuck Vavrosky and the staff are trying to get the wrestlers into form as quickly as possible.

Knowing COVID-19 would impact the season, Vavrosky, along with the Kennedy Wrestling Boosters, invested in wrestling dummies to help promote social distancing while allowing the wrestlers to develop and refine moves. Continue reading at hometownsource.com →

Zack Bigboy (1987-2018)

Zack Bigboy, 30, of Apple Valley, Minn., passed away, Friday, Feb. 16, 2018, in Minneapolis. He was born Feb. 28, 1987 in Grand Rapids, Minn., the son of Mary Pero and Patrick Bigboy.

Zack graduated from Bloomington Kennedy High School in 2004. He wrestled all four years for the high school and was a three-time MN State Champion. He also won the MN-WI tournament all four years. He continued wrestling three more years for the University of California State – Bakersfield.
