Celebrating 75 years of wrestling

Program began in 1947 and is among most successful in the state

Blue Earth’s wrestling program began in 1947 and on Saturday, Aug. 6, the Buc Wrestling Boosters held a banquet to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Buccaneer wrestling.

In addition to a golf tournament, a social hour and banquet were held at Riverside Town and Country Club.

Guest speakers at the event, which was emceed by Steve Frederickson, included two past Buc State champs. Ron Malcolm, who won a title in 1951, and A.B. (Albert) Russ, who was a two-time champion in 1956 and 1957, shared stories from the early years of the program. Continue reading at faribaultcountyregister →

Al DeLeon 1938-2020

Hall of Famer Al DeLeon passed away on December 16th. He was 82 years old. A three-time state champion for Blue Earth High School and a two-time All-American for Mankato State, DeLeon was inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Dave Bartelma Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2006. He went on to coach wrestling at Britt High School in Iowa. DeLeon is a member of the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Mankato State University Hall of Fame, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame with a Lifetime Service Award.
