MSUM Wrestling Adds Caden Steffen to Coaching Staff

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead head wrestling coach Kris Nelson has announced the hiring of multi-time All-American Caden Steffen to the Dragon coaching staff. Steffen will serve as an assistant coach, focusing his work on the roster’s upper-weight classes.

“We are excited to have Caden Steffen join our staff,” said Nelson. “He will help with all aspects of the Dragon wrestling program and be especially beneficial to the team’s upper-weight wrestlers.”

Steffen most recently concluded a historic career at Southwest Minnesota State this past winter. He was a stalwart for the Mustangs at 197 pounds last season, earning an 18-4 ledger in 2023-24, including a 9-0 dual record. His prowess on the mat guided him to a berth at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships this past season. Steffen was ranked as high as number three in the nation at the weight class during the year. In 2022-23, Steffen would gather a 16-2 overall record at 184 pounds, garnering the number two ranking at the weight class during the season.

Steffen honored with All-American accolades by NSCA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is proud to announce Southwest Minnesota State University wrestler senior Caden Steffen as a 2024 All-American Athlete Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year Award recipient.

This award recognizes Steffen’s athletic accomplishments and his dedication to strength and conditioning. Nominated by SMSU head wrestling coach Chayse Jackson, Steffen’s determination to improve in athletics while maintaining academic prominence is a great model for all student-athletes at SMSU. He is one of 12 student-athletes in the sport of wrestling recognized by the NSCA.

Steffen ready for NCAA Championships

MARSHALL, Minn. – Caden Steffen will represent the Mustangs at the 2024 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, which will be held March 15-16 at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan.

Session I is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, which includes the preliminaries and first-round matches. Session II will begin on Friday at 5 p.m. with the championship quarterfinals, as well as the first and second rounds of the consolation bracket. On Saturday, Session III will begin at 10 a.m. and includes the championship semifinals, third-round consolations, and the consolation semifinals. Session IV will be the championship finals and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Steffen is making his third trip to the NCAA championships after earning all-American honors in 2021 and 2022. This season, Steffen is 20-2 overall and punched his ticket to nationals after placing second at the NCAA Super Region V Tournament in Minot, N.D. on March 2. Steffen went 2-1 at the regional, defeating Cameron Lopez (UIU) and Cannon Potts (Minot) before losing the championship match to Dominic Murphy (SCSU).

Caden Steffen named First Team All-NSIC

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The 2023-24 NSIC Wrestling All-NSIC teams were announced Tuesday morning by the league office. The all-conference teams were selected by the league coaches based on their regular season performances, with the top point receivers at each weight class being named first team and the next wrestler named second team. The NSIC Wrestler of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year will be selected by the league coaches and announced following the NCAA Division II Championships.

Caden Steffen, earned first team All-Conference honors after going a perfect 9-0 during the NSIC dual season. Over his perfect dual season, Steffen earned four tech fall victories, one major decision, three decisions, and one sudden victory. Steffen punched his ticket to the 2024 NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday, as he placed second in the NCAA Super Region V tournament.

Steffen named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University’s Caden Steffen has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week. The announcement came from the league office in Burnsville, Minn., on Tuesday morning.

Steffen, a native of Zumbrota, Minn., went 4-0 this weekend, placing first at the Dakota Wesleyan Open at 197 pounds. Steffen pinned Minot State’s Shane Hansen with 35 seconds remaining in the second round. From there, Steffen earned a 7-4 decision win over Augustana’s Zach Peterson and a 16-0 tech fall against Northern State’s Ryan Hirschkorn, to earn a spot in the championship match at 197. Steffen matched up against Tereus Henry, who is currently the ranked third at 197 lbs in Division 2, Steffen dominated the match, picking up a decisive 10-4 decision victory.
