Frank J. Huelskamp (1930-2014)

Frank Huelskamp of Brooklyn Park passed away on December 29th at the age of 84.

Huelskamp served as Rules Coordinator for the Minnesota State High School League from 1958-1977. He is credited with starting the first high school wrestling programs at Mankato and Crosby-Ironton. Huelskamp coached at Macalester College and was an assistant coach at The University of Minnesota under Head Coach Wally Johnson. He was inducted into the Minnesota Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008.

Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Friday, January 2 at St. Joseph Parish Community, 8701 36th Ave North, New Hope, with visitation one hour before Mass at church. Interment Saturday, Jan. 3, 11 a.m. at St. George Catholic Cemetery, St. George, MN.

One teen killed, two injured in crash early Friday near Alexandria

Wrestler Michael Schluter from Alexandria was killed in the crash

One teen was killed and two others were injured in a one-vehicle rollover crash Friday.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), at 2:43 a.m., a passerby reported the crash on County Road 23 just south of Busch Road SE, between Alexandria and Forada. Continue reading at

Kevin D. Gross (1961-2014)

Former Wheaton/Herman Norcross wrestling coach Kevin Gross passed away on Thursday. He was 52 years old. Gross coached the Bullets to several state tournament appearances including a state championship in 1996 and a runner-up finish in 1995.

Edor Nelson, founder of Augsburg College wrestling program, dies at 100

Edor Nelson, multi-sport athlete and coach at Augsburg College who launched the school’s now-famous wrestling program, died Wednesday, just nine days after celebrating his 100th birthday, the Minneapolis-based school announced Thursday.

Born August 18, 1914 in Dawson, Minn., Nelson played baseball, football and basketball for the Auggies, earning all-conference honors in baseball and basketball. After graduating from Augsburg in 1938, Nelson moved to Lamberton, Minn., where he was an instructor as well as baseball and basketball coach. Continue reading at

Jeff Gallagher (1951-2014)

Former Montevideo wrestling coach Jeff Gallagher passed away on Saturday. Gallagher coached for many years at Montevideo until stepping down in 2006. He is a member of the Montevideo Athletic Hall of Fame and the MWCA Minnesota Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-7:00 PM at the Church of St. Joseph in Montevideo. Obituary
