TRNAVA, Slovakia (September 21) – It’s hard to believe that Gable Steveson (USA) is still improving after winning three world titles, but he stood outside Trnava’s City Sports Hall and said it’s possible.

“I’m stronger, quicker and my endurance is better than ever, but I’m still growing,” said Steveson. “I look at myself as the second-place guy, and that’s how I’m approaching every practice. Even though I’ve reached the top, I still train like I’m behind somebody.”

With two years of junior eligibility left, Steveson’s comes to Slovakia chasing his fourth age-level world title.

No doubt that he enters the 2018 Junior World Championships with a target on his back and he knows it. “I love having the target on my back. A lot of people have tried to hit the target, but as of right now, everyone has missed.” Continue reading at unitedworldwrestling.org

Minnesota teen sensation Gable Steveson wants to take down wrestling’s best in Las Vegas

The Apple Valley senior, a future Gopher, will be taking on wrestlers 10 years older. But his record suggests he’ll hold his own, and then some

When Gable Steveson took to the mat during the high school wrestling season, a dominant performance usually followed. After all, the Apple Valley senior heavyweight stretched his winning streak to 173 matches and won his fourth consecutive state championship by pinning his four state tournament opponents in a combined 2 minutes, 11 seconds.

It was clear that the Gophers-bound Steveson was ready to face a higher level of competition. And on Friday and Saturday, he’ll get that challenge in the Marine Corps U.S. Open wrestling championships in Las Vegas.

Steveson, 17, is moving up to the senior freestyle division — the sport’s highest — and will compete at 125 kilograms (275.5 pounds) in Las Vegas, with an opportunity to advance to the World Team Trials from May 18-20 in Rochester, Minn., if he finishes in the top seven. Apple Valley’s Gable Steveson chasing uncharted greatness

Gable Steveson has won 167 consecutive matches, and another victory lap at the high school wrestling state tournament would leave the Apple Valley star with the highest winning percentage in prep history before he takes his heavyweight prowess to the University of Minnesota.

Some clashes were memorable, like his viral takedown of Daniel Kerkvliet, who like Steveson is ranked No. 1 in his weight class nationally, during a Feb. 2 dual meet with Simley. Most are a blur. But Steveson has never forgotten his only high school loss to Justin Cumberbatch of Alexander, Minn., in the 2014 state tournament final.

He was ranked No. 1 in the state, Cumberbatch No. 2. Steveson recalled granular details of that pivotal moment at Xcel Energy Center when teammate Jamal Tidwell lit a competitive fire in him that burns intensely.

“I remember sitting down on the mat in the back of Xcel and was like, ‘whatever,’ ” Steveson recalled. “Tid came up to me and said, ‘You just lost!’ ” I was like, ‘Yeah, I noticed.’ I also told him it’s not going to happen again — ever. It hasn’t happened again.” Continue reading at www.twincities.com
