NDSU’s Sax Falls in Blood Round of NCAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – North Dakota State wrestler Gaven Sax picked up a pair of wins on Friday but fell in the blood round and was eliminated at the 2024 NCAA National Championships at the T-Mobile Center one match shy of All-American status.

Sax opened up his day by avenging an early season loss to No. 13 seed Justin McCoy of Virginia in come-from-behind fashion. McCoy scored a first-period takedown but trailing 3-2, Sax secured a takedown and a two-point nearfall in the third period for a 7-3 victory.

Later in the day session, Sax recorded his second shutout of the tournament, picking up a major decision on No. 27 seed Danny Wask of Navy. Sax recorded a first-period takedown and then 2:22 of riding time with a rideout. After a scoreless second, Sax picked up an escape, takedown, and two-point near fall before riding out the period and picking up a riding time point at the end for a 10-0 win.

NDSU’s Sax Advances to Day Two of NCAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – North Dakota State wrestling’s Gaven Sax advanced to day two of the 2024 NCAA Championships after rebounding from an opening-round loss with a win in the first consolation round Thursday night at the T-Mobile Center.

Sax dropped his opening-round match to Central Michigan’s Alex Cramer in the Thursday morning session. After Sax re-attacked and tried to get No. 19 seed Cramer to his back, the Central Michigan wrestler was able to hold Sax’s leg and force him to his back, securing a neutral pin for the upset win over 14th-seeded Sax.

In the evening session, Sax rebounded with a dominating win over No. 30 seed Myles Takats of Bucknell. After a scoreless first period and a neutral start chosen by Takats, Sax recorded a takedown straight into a four-point near fall for a 7-0 lead. He then added two more four-point nearfalls to secure the tech fall win at 4:28.

Sax Heads to 2024 NCAA National Championships

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State wrestling’s Gaven Sax heads to Kansas City, Missouri this week for the NCAA Championships, March 21-23, at the T-Mobile Center. Sax is the No. 14 seed in the 174-pound bracket.

Sax (17-5), who is making his first appearance at the NCAA Championships, enters the championship fresh off of a Big 12 Championship runner-up performance. He went 3-1 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a tech fall and a pair of ranked wins to reach the final.

Entering the NCAA Championships, the junior has a career record of 6-7 against potential opposition in the 174-pound bracket. However, Sax holds a 6-3 record this season.

Sax 14th Seed for NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – North Dakota State wrestler Gaven Sax has been named as the No. 14 seed in the 174-pound bracket for the 2024 NCAA Championships.

Sax, who finished as the runner-up at last week’s Big 12 Championship, posted a 17-5 record this season. Ranked No. 14 by FloWrestling and No. 16 by InterMat, Sax will open up the championships against No. 19 seed Alex Cramer of Central Michigan.

NDSU’s Sax Named Big 12 Wrestler of the Week

IRVING, Texas – North Dakota State wrestler Gaven Sax has been named the Big 12 Co-Wrestler of the Week, announced the conference office on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Sax shares the honor alongside West Virginia’s Jett Strickenberger.

Sax earned the first Big 12 Wrestler of the Week of the season after he took down then-No. 20 Elise Brown Ton of Nebraska in the 174-pound match of Saturday’s dual. The junior rallied from a 3-1 deficit to begin the third period. Sax responded with a reversal to start the final period, followed by a four-point nearfall and eventually seeing out a riding time point to secure an 8-3 decision. It was Sax’s third ranked victory of his career.
