Greg Kerkvliet recognized as Minnesota winner

STILLWATER, Okla. — The National Wrestling Hall of Fame on Thursday announced the state and regional winners of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award (DSHSEA).

The DSHSEA recognizes and celebrates the nation’s most outstanding high school senior male wrestlers for their excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship, and community service.

The Hall of Fame will announce the state and regional winners of the Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award (TSHSEA) on Monday. The TSHSEA recognizes and celebrates the nation’s most outstanding high school senior female wrestlers for their excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, citizenship, and community service.

Regional winners for both awards are selected from state winners, and the national winners will be chosen from the regional winners.

Cadet World champ Greg Kerkvliet nearing return from ACL tear

It won’t be this weekend.

Greg Kerkvliet has a time frame when he will return to competition.

That is positive thought for the two-time Cadet World finalist and 2017 Cadet World champion from Simley (Minn.) High School.

It is been almost four full months since Kerkvliet suffered an ACL injury in September while preparing for the Junior World Championships and the recovery time has had its positives and negatives.

“I’d say realizing how much being on the mat means to a person, just wanting to do anything to get back on the mat,” Kerkvliet said of the most challenging part of the rehab process. Continue reading at trackwrestling.com

Gable Steveson named to ASICS America Boys First Team for third time

McKee and Kerkvliet named to 2nd Team; Robb 3rd Team; Lloyd and Kennedy HM

ASICS America Corporation is pleased to announce the 33rd annual ASICS Boys All-America Wrestling Team, and honors senior Gable Steveson (285) of Apple Valley (Minn.) and junior Adam Busiello (126) of Eastport (N.Y.) Eastport-South Manor as repeat First Team selections.

The ASICS All-America Team, selected by a nationwide panel of wrestling experts, is the only national all-star team for which wrestlers enrolled in all four high-school grades are eligible.

The ASICS All-America Team includes eight wrestlers at each of the 14 high school weight classes – the First, Second, and Third Teams and five Honorable Mention selections. To be considered, a wrestler must have competed during the scholastic season, and all team members were selected at the weight class at which they competed, or would have competed, in their state tournament or the National Prep Championships this year.

A trip to Pinnacle Wrestling School on a Tuesday evening will bring all sorts of characters to the mats. The Guillotine Grapevine: Before and After the Steveson-Kerkvliet supermatch – GG40

In the lore of Minnesota wrestling, Friday, February 2 might go down as one of the most important in the state’s history. Not because the dual outcome impacted a state or sectional title, but because you saw two world champions collide as two of the state’s power programs met in front of a capacity crowd at Simley High School in Inver Grove Heights.

Episode 40 of The Guillotine Grapevine goes before and after the Gable Steveson-Greg Kerkvliet super match. Steveson, a three-time world champion at the international age-group levels at heavyweight faced off with Simley 220-pounder Kerkvliet, the 2017 Cadet world champion at 100kg.

We talk with fathers Robert Steveson, Greg Kerkvliet, then we talk with the combatants before finishing up with Simley AD and wrestling coach Will Short about setting up the match.
