Itasca to launch women’s wrestling program

The campus seeking female wrestlers to join the program in Fall 2024

GRAND RAPIDS, MN. (Northern News Now) – Minnesota North College’s Itasca campus has announced a new women’s wrestling program, made possible through a $2,000 grant from the National Junior College Athletic Association.

The grant funds will go towards equipment, coaching staff, facility upgrades, and recruitment efforts.

“Two-year collegiate sports provide student-athletes with the opportunity to further both their athletic and academic careers,” said Brian Luckett, NJCAA Foundation Executive Director. “The NJCAA Sport Opportunity Grant affords the NJCAA Foundation a pathway to continue supporting student-athletes and the member colleges who provide them with these incredible opportunities while also promoting continued growth and development throughout the organization.”

NWCA Announces the 2023 NJCAA Men’s Scholar All-America Awards

Manheim, PA – The NWCA has announced the 2022-23 Scholar All-America Team and Individual Honorees for the NJCAA Men’s Division, with 48 individuals from 17 institutions receiving awards.

“It is an absolute honor to recognize these outstanding student-athletes for their incredible accomplishments,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “These wrestlers have demonstrated an unwavering dedication to both their academic and athletic pursuits, and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.”

Itasca Community College secured the top spot in the team race with a 3.75 GPA, followed by Pratt with a 3.585 and Iowa Western with a 3.35.

NJCAA North Plains District Qualifiers

Rochester qualified all ten wrestlers to the NJCAA National Championships. The Yellowjackets were followed by Itasca and Ridgewater – both with six qualifiers, and Northland with two. Minnesota West did not get anyone through to the national tournament.

The NJCAA National Championships are set to take place on March 3rd and 4th in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Itasca gears up for the post-season

As Itasca concludes its regular season and gears up for the post-season, here’s a look at where the Vikings are at.

Heading into the conference championships and national qualifier in Thief River Falls on February 19th, the Vikings are feeling confident. The starting line-up has been finalized as of the Pioneer Open this past weekend. The Vikings had two champions – David Platt (149) bumped up to compete at 157 pounds and got two pins and a big win in the finals. The other champion was Zayne Brown at 125 pounds, getting two pins to close out a great regular season.
