Berge wins U.S. Open Title

LAS VEGAS — South Dakota State wrestler Bennett Berge claimed the 86-kilogram freestyle title in the Under-20 Division of the 2023 U.S. Open held over the weekend.

The top-seeded Berge, who was wrestling as a member of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club, posted a 6-0 record. He recorded shutouts against each of his first four opponents, winning by a combined score of 42-0. The Mantorville, Minnesota, native won by a 9-4 score (VPO1) in his semifinal matchup against Clayton Whiting of the Tiger Style Wrestling Club, then notched a 7-4 (VPO1) victory over Max McEnelly of the Waconia Wrestling Club to win the title.

Sloan Reaches World Final

PONTEVEDRA, Spain — South Dakota State’s Tanner Sloan will wrestle for a gold medal after an impressive day of freestyle competition Friday at the U23 World Championship.

A native of Alburnett, Iowa, Sloan went 3-0 in action in the 97-kilogram division. He opened with a 10-2 victory over Mucahit Celik of Turkey, followed by a 6-3 decision against Andro Margishvili of Georgia.

In semifinal action, Sloan posted another 10-2 victory, this time over Islan Ilyasov of Azerbaijan. He is slated to square off against Amirali Azarpira of Iran in Saturday’s championship match.

Sloan arrives in Spain for U23 World Meet

PONTEVEDRA, Spain – South Dakota State wrestler Tanner Sloan is abroad this week to compete on an international stage in the U23 World Championship.

Sloan is slated to compete in the 97-kilogram senior freestyle division Friday and Saturday. Qualification rounds will be held on Friday, with medal matches taking place on Saturday. The draw for the senior freestyle division has yet to be announced.

Sloan Qualifies For Second World Team

Bennett Berge wins U20 86kg World Team spot

GENEVA, Ohio — South Dakota State wrestler Tanner Sloan earned a spot on the U.S. World Team by winning the 97-kilogram title in the senior freestyle division and incoming Jackrabbit Bennett Berge claimed the 86-kilogram championship in the under-20 class during weekend competition at the UWW World Team Trials.

A native of Alburnett, Iowa, Sloan advanced to the championship round by winning his first three matches by a combined 37-4, including shutouts of Matt Micale, Pennsylvania, in the quarterfinals, 13-0, and Tyler Bagody of the Clarion Regional Training Center in the semifinals, 10-0.

That set up a best-of-three series with Nick Stemmet of the California RTC and Stanford. Wrestling as a member of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club, Sloan punched his ticket by winning by scores of 10-0 and 10-3.

Carlson Fares Well at U23 Nationals

LINCOLN, Neb. – For the second time in three months, South Dakota State’s Clay Carlson earned All-America honors at a major wrestling competition. This past weekend, Carlson recorded a fourth-place finish in the 65-kilogram weight class of the freestyle division at the 2021 UWW U23 Nationals.

A native of Willmar, Minnesota, Carlson posted a 7-2 record as a member of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club. He opened with a 10-2 (VPO-1) victory over Chris Sandoval of the Northern Colorado Wrestling Club, followed by a 5-4 (VFA 1:54) win against Timothy Levine of the New England Regional Training Center.

DeVos posts runner-up finish at UWW Juniors

CORALVILLE, Iowa – Cade DeVos reached the finals of the 74-kilogram division in freestyle competition, leading a contingent of South Dakota State wrestlers over the weekend at the 2021 UWW Junior Nationals.

Wrestling under the banner of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club, DeVos reeled off five consecutive victories to set up a best-of-three championship series against Keegan O’Toole of the Tiger Style Wrestling Club. A native of Altoona, Iowa, DeVos won his first three matches by a combined 33-2 before defeating Derek Fields of the Arsenal Wrestling Club, 10-0, in the quarterfinals.

DeVos advanced to the finals with another 10-0 victory over Clayton Ulrey from the Southeast Regional Training Center, but was swept in the championship series by O’Toole by scores of 11-1 (4:43) and 8-0.
