Bennett Berge Set to Compete at U20 World Championships

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Bennett Berge doesn’t spend much time away from the mat.

“Right when schools over I got out here and started training. Right after world team titles it was another two weeks off the mat,” Bennett Berge said.

That two weeks enough time for him to refocus.

Augsburg’s Emily Shilson wins world junior title

UFA, Russia — Augsburg University women’s wrestler Emily Shilson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Mounds View HS) claimed the junior world championship in the 50-kilogram (110-pounds) women’s freestyle category, with a dominating performance at the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships, completed on Thursday at the Ufa Arena.

Shilson outscored her opponents by a 36-10 margin in four victories on Wednesday and Thursday, including a pair of 10-0, first-period technical superiority (technical fall) victories in the semifinal and championship matches.

On Wednesday, she opened with a 6-3 win over Natallia Varakina of Belarus, the 2018 Youth Olympic Games cadet champion (46 kg/101 pounds), converting a takedown and exposure to build a 4-1 lead after one period, then claiming a late takedown to secure the win. In the quarterfinals, Shilson had to overcome a 4-0 first-period deficit to claim a 10-7 win over Viktoriia Aleksandrova of Russia, a 2018 Cadet World Championships bronze medalist (43 kg/95 pounds). She scored three takedowns and two exposures in the second period, including a takedown and exposure with 41 seconds left to pull ahead for the first time in the bout.

Team USA makes history with three Junior World Champs in women’s freestyle

Emily Shilson adds Junior World Gold to her medal collection

UFA, Russia – For the first time in history, Team USA has multiple Junior World champions in women’s freestyle as Emily Shilson, Amit Elor, and Kylie Welker won gold on Thursday at the 2021 Junior World Championships in Ufa, Russia.

All three women dominated their ways to earning finals bids.

Just weeks after winning a Cadet World gold, Amit Elor won her second World title of the summer, topping the 68 kg Junior bracket. She won both tournaments without surrendering a single point to her opponents. In Thursday’s Junior World finals, Elor took on 2021 Junior World bronze medalist Elizaveta Petliakova from Russia. The American earned an early takedown directly into three leg-laces for an 8-0 lead. She added two more step-outs for a 10-0 shutout. Elor is also a 2019 Cadet World bronze medalist. Emily Shilson will wrestle Enkhzul Batbaatar of Mongolia for gold tomorrow

UFA, Russia – The USA secured three finalists on the first day of women’s freestyle action at the 2021 Junior World Championships, including Emily Shilson, Amit Elor and Kylie Welker. All three athletes, who are past age-group World medalists, will compete for gold on Thursday.

Amit Elor, who entered Russia fresh off a Cadet World title in July, only needed one win to advance to the 68 kg semifinals, which she earned in dominant fashion, cruising past Arju Arju from India, 10-0, in less than a minute. In the semifinals, Elor needed just 1:24 to complete an 11-0 tech fall against 2021 Junior European silver medalist Zsuzsanna Molnar from Slovakia. The American was on the board early with a step out, followed by a takedown into two turns from a leg lace. She finished off the match with an arm spin, which earned her four points and secured her spot in her second World finals of the summer.

Women’s freestyle team receives draws for 2021 Junior World Championships in Russia

All 10 wrestlers on the U.S. women’s freestyle team received draws for the 2021 Junior World Championships, which starts Wednesday in Ufa, Russia.

Beginning their tournaments on Wednesday are Emily Shilson (50 kg), Payton Stroud (55 kg), Mia Macaluso (59 kg), Amit Elor (68 kg) and Kylie Welker (76 kg).

The other five athletes—Jaslynn Gallegos (53 kg), Claire DiCugno (57 kg), Korina Blades (62 kg), Alara Boyd (65 kg) and Kennedy Blades (72 kg)—will take the mats on Thursday. Continue reading at teamusa.org →

Brayton Lee Wraps Up Junior Worlds

Brayton Lee dropped his first bout of the 2019 UWW Junior World Championships to Ashraf Ashirov (Azerbaijan) by 3-2 decision and was subsequently eliminated when Ashirov dropped his next match. 

Lee would have had a chance to advance via the repechage system if Ashirov had beaten Vasile Diacon (Moldova) and continued to win. Instead, Lee’s Estonian tournament experience is cut short after only one bout.

Brayton Lee Receives Draw for Junior Worlds

Rising Gopher redshirt freshman Brayton Lee received his draw for the UWW Junior World Wrestling Championships which begin Monday in Talinn, Estonia.

When action kicks off at 2:30 am CT Lee will face the winner of Ashraf Ashirov (Azerbaijan) and Raul Zarbaliev (Israel). Ashirov finished 8th at the 2018 Cadet World Championships while Zarbilev finished 9th at the 2019 European Juniors.
