Blockhus Returning to Gopher Wrestling

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota wrestling is welcoming a familiar face back to the program as sixth-year senior Michael Blockhus is returning to don the Maroon and Gold once more, head coach Brandon Eggum announced Saturday.

“After taking time to reflect and think, I’ve realized I have some unfinished business at Minnesota,” Blockhus said. “Finishing last year as an All-American, I know that I can help this team have a really special season, and I want to give it one more go with those guys that have become like brothers to me.”

Blockhus was a three-year starter for the Gophers after transferring from Northern Iowa following his redshirt freshman season, collecting a 69-41 career record and 23 bonus-point victories. A three-time NCAA qualifier for Minnesota, Blockhus broke through this past season to reach the podium for the first time in his career, placing eighth at 149 pounds at the 2023 NCAA Championships.

Storley Headlining Bellator 298, Blockhus Making MMA Debut

MINNEAPOLIS – A pair of former Minnesota wrestlers are set to compete Friday night at Bellator 298 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The main event features No. 1 Logan Storley (14-2) against No. 7 Brennan Ward (17-6) in a welterweight bout.

Storley was a four-time All-American at Minnesota from 2011-15. He finished his career with an overall record 119-27, including a 47-7 mark in duals and 27-3 record in Big Ten matchups. He claimed third place at the NCAA Championships as a junior, fourth as both a sophomore and senior and sixth as a freshman.

All-American Blockhus Waives Final Season of Eligibility for 2023-24 Season

MINNEAPOLIS – NCAA All-American and Minnesota 149-pounder Michael Blockhus announced Wednesday morning that he will forgo his final season of eligibility and will not return to the team for the 2023-24 season.

The redshirt senior had the opportunity to return and utilize the extra year of eligibility that was granted in 2020 due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, but he has elected to move on to a new chapter in pursuit of a professional MMA career.

Introducing The Gopher’s Michael Blockhus

Michael Blockhus has proven to be an elite wrestling talent, compiling a 166-8 high record and earning three Iowa state championships, before qualifying for the NCAA tournament as a redshirt freshman at Northern Iowa last season.

Now, after transferring to the University of Minnesota this past offseason, Blockhus is poised to be a force once again, this time as a 149-pounder for the Golden Gophers as he looks to finish his career in the Maroon & Gold.

Michael Blockhus, a 2020 NCAA qualifier, to transfer from Northern Iowa to Minnesota

It did not take long for Michael Blockhus to find a new home.

One week after announcing his intent to transfer from Northern Iowa, Blockhus announced that he plans to join the Minnesota wrestling program. The sophomore will join the Gophers next semester, and plans to wrestle 149 pounds.

“Blessed to say I’m going to be going to the U of Minnesota as a gopher this next semester,” Blockhus said in a Tweet, announcing his decision. “Ready to go to work. Thank you to all of my friends and family for all of their support throughout this process.
