KOURTANE, Finland – The United States claimed two medals in men’s freestyle on the opening day of the University World Championships on Tuesday.

Capturing a silver medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. was Zach Sanders (Lauderdale, Minn./Minnesota Storm), and winning a bronze medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. was Colton Sponseller (Glenmont, Ohio/New York AC). Continue reading at www.themat.com

Sanders Finishes Second as Gophers Compete at World University Wrestling Championships

Gopher prodigies Zach Sanders and Tony Nelson represent USA in Kourtane, Finland

The University of Minnesota has two wrestlers competing this week at the World University Wrestling Championships in Kourtane, Finland as members of the USA men’s freestyle team. Former Gopher Zach Sanders (Lauderdale, Minn.) and current heavyweight starter, and reigning NCAA National Champion, Tony Nelson (Cambridge, Minn.) after qualifying at the University Trials in Colorado Springs in late August.

Nine Gophers Receive Individual Rankings by Amateur Wrestling News

Minnesota boasts talent in nine of 10 weight class selections

Minnesota Wrestling is in for another great season and Amateur Wrestling News agrees. The publication has listed many Gophers among the nation’s best, releasing its 2012-13 Preseason Division I College Individual Rankings. Someone from Minnesota has been named one to watch in nine of the 10 weight classes of competition. Only one Gopher is ranked outside the top 10 while two wrestlers took the top spot.

Robinson Makes History with Hall of Fame Induction

J Robinson and Chad Kraft represent wrestling in M Club Hall of Fame Class of 2012

In another year of celebrating the rich tradition of Gopher Athletics, the University of Minnesota will welcome another cast of inductees into the M Club Hall of Fame. The Class of 2012 is made up of nine members, including two glittering representatives for Minnesota Wrestling: former student-athlete Chad Kraft (1996-1999) and current head coach J Robinson.
