Mavericks Takedown Marauders 29-12

BISMARCK, N.D. — The No. 17 Minnesota State wrestling team defeated the U-Mary Marauders, 29-12, in a Friday evening dual that saw the Mavericks win seven matches.

At 125 lbs., Trenton McManus was pinned in the third period by Jeremy Leintz to give the Marauders a 6-0 lead.

After that, the Mavericks won three consecutive matches to take a 12-6 lead. At 133 lbs., Cole Gille defeated Lincoln Turman by a 3-0 decision. No. 9 Louie Sanders then picked up an 11-3 major decision win over Trevor Fauver at 141 lbs., before No. 3 Kyle Rathman came away with a 16-1 technical fall win over Devin Steidler at 149 lbs.

Tickets are on sale now for the 2020 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday, March 13 & 14, 2020, at NCAA.com/tickets. The championships are co-hosted by Augustana University and the Sioux Falls Sports Authority.

Single-session and all-session tickets are available, with affordable options for all ages. Fans interested in premium seating options should contact the KELOLAND Box Office located in the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. Discounted tickets are also available to groups purchasing at least 10 tickets.

Mavericks Tied for 17th in NWCA Poll

MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota State wrestling team is tied for 17th in the most-recent 2019-20 NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.

The Mavericks have three individuals ranked at their respective weight classes, including junior Kyle Rathman (Apple Valley, Minn.), who is rated third at 149 lbs. Rathman, who placed seventh at last year’s NCAA DII national championships in earning All-American honors, holds an 8-1 record for 2019-20.

#17 Mavericks to wrestle rescheduled SMSU dual on Jan. 30

MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 17 Minnesota State wrestling team is scheduled to travel to Marshall, Minn., to face the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs for an NSIC dual on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 p.m.

The conference dual, which will take place inside the PE Gym, was previously scheduled for Jan. 18, but inclement weather postponed the dual.

The Mavericks hold a 4-1 record and will be traveling to North Dakota for a pair of duals this weekend. Friday’s dual against University of Mary (2-4, 0-1 NSIC) is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., while Saturday’s dual with Minot State (4-3, 1-1 NSIC) is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.

Minnesota State Goes 3-0 at San Francisco Duals

SAN FRANCISCO – The No. 15 Minnesota State wrestling team traveled to San Francisco State to participate in the San Francisco Duals inside the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza, finishing 3-0 on the day.

The Mavericks earned a 22-21 win over No. 11 Adams State to start the day. They followed up with a 27-12 win over No. 19 Chadron State before rounding out with a 38-9 win over Simon Fraser.

In their first dual of the day against Adams State, the Mavericks fell behind 12-0 after three matches. A 4-2 decision win by Kyle Rathman at 149 lbs., put the Mavericks on the board. MSU dropped the next two matches to go behind 21-3, but four consecutive wins secured a 22-21 win for the Mavericks. At 174 lbs., Zach Johnston won by fall in 3:35 to make it 21-9. Trevor Turriff followed with a 7-4 decision win at 184 lbs., before Matthew Blome earned an 11-1 major decision win at 197 lbs. At heavyweight, Max Villnow came away with a clutch pinfall in the second period to secure a 22-21 win over the Grizzlies.
