Minnesota State Enters 2019 Postseason Rated 17th

Mankato, Minn. — On the cusp of the 2019 postseason, the Minnesota State wrestling team is rated 17th in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.

The Mavericks, who completed the 2018-19 regular season with a 9-2 mark in dual action and finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 7-1 league record, have four individuals who are ranked in their respective individual classes.

With over 30 years of coaching experience, the last 26 at Minnesota State in Mankato, it was inevitable Jim Makovsky would reach 300 victories. Now standing at 302 career coaching victories, with 279 of them in Mankato, Makovsky talks about what led him to a career in coaching from his time at Valley City State, how he quit his job, proposed to his wife and pulled all his money out of the bank – on the same day.

A music aficionado, the interview almost got derailed early talking about Minnesota concert venues. A likable and ethical coach, Makovsky talks about the challenges and benefits of choosing Division II and Minnesota State-Mankato as a student-athlete. He also tells the story behind how he ended up giving back a half-point at the 2008 NCAA Division II championships due to a scoring error he found, and what the ramifications of that move actually were.

#10 Minnesota State Closes Out Regular Season With 18-16 Win at MSU-Moorhead

Moorhead, Minn. — #10 Minnesota State completed its 2018-19 regular-season schedule by earning an 18-16 road Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual at MSU-Moorhead Sunday.

The Mavericks won five of ten matches vs. the Dragons in upping their record to 9-2 on the season. Minnesota State finished second in the NSIC with a 7-1 mark against conference opponents.

#1 St. Cloud State wrestling clinches a share of 8th consecutive NSIC championship

The dynasty continues! The #1 St. Cloud State University wrestling team (19-0, 7-0 NSIC) clinched a share of its eighth consecutive NSIC championship with a 30-9 victory over #10 Minnesota State University (8-2, 6-1 NSIC) on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.

The victory gave the Huskies ownership of at least a share of the conference title, which they can win outright with a victory at Augustana in the final NSIC dual of the season for SCSU on Thursday, Feb. 14 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Dragons Host No. 10 Mavericks on Sunday to Conclude Regular Season

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team will wrap up the regular season with a home dual against No. 10 Minnesota-State Mankato on Saturday. Prior to the dual the Dragons will recognize seniors Adam Blees and Dylan Connell.

The Dragons last competed on Saturday night when they lost to Southwest Minnesota State 24-16. The Dragons won four matches on the night, including Cole Jones, who won his 125 pound match via forfeit. Also picking up wins for MSUM were Jordan Magnuson (285), Mason Schulz (141) and Adam Blees (174).

Minnesota State Stands Tied for Tenth in National Poll

Mankato, Minn. — The Minnesota State wrestling team is tied for tenth in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.

A trie of Maverick individuals are rated in the top ten of their respective individual classes.

Sophomore Kyle Rathman (149) is rated second and has fashioned a 12-1 mark this year.
