2018-19 NSIC Wrestling All-Conference Teams Announced

BURNSVILLE, Minn. – The 2018-19 NSIC Wrestling All-Conferences teams were announced as the regular season concluded last week. The all-conference teams were selected by the league coaches with the top point receivers at each weight class being named first team and the second being named second team. The NSIC Wrestler of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year will be selected by the league coaches and announced following the NCAA Championships.

Minnesota State Enters 2019 Postseason Rated 17th

Mankato, Minn. — On the cusp of the 2019 postseason, the Minnesota State wrestling team is rated 17th in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.

The Mavericks, who completed the 2018-19 regular season with a 9-2 mark in dual action and finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 7-1 league record, have four individuals who are ranked in their respective individual classes.

With over 30 years of coaching experience, the last 26 at Minnesota State in Mankato, it was inevitable Jim Makovsky would reach 300 victories. Now standing at 302 career coaching victories, with 279 of them in Mankato, Makovsky talks about what led him to a career in coaching from his time at Valley City State, how he quit his job, proposed to his wife and pulled all his money out of the bank – on the same day.

A music aficionado, the interview almost got derailed early talking about Minnesota concert venues. A likable and ethical coach, Makovsky talks about the challenges and benefits of choosing Division II and Minnesota State-Mankato as a student-athlete. He also tells the story behind how he ended up giving back a half-point at the 2008 NCAA Division II championships due to a scoring error he found, and what the ramifications of that move actually were.
