SAN FRANCISCO – The No. 15 Minnesota State wrestling team traveled to San Francisco State to participate in the San Francisco Duals inside the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza, finishing 3-0 on the day.
The Mavericks earned a 22-21 win over No. 11 Adams State to start the day. They followed up with a 27-12 win over No. 19 Chadron State before rounding out with a 38-9 win over Simon Fraser.
In their first dual of the day against Adams State, the Mavericks fell behind 12-0 after three matches. A 4-2 decision win by Kyle Rathman at 149 lbs., put the Mavericks on the board. MSU dropped the next two matches to go behind 21-3, but four consecutive wins secured a 22-21 win for the Mavericks. At 174 lbs., Zach Johnston won by fall in 3:35 to make it 21-9. Trevor Turriff followed with a 7-4 decision win at 184 lbs., before Matthew Blome earned an 11-1 major decision win at 197 lbs. At heavyweight, Max Villnow came away with a clutch pinfall in the second period to secure a 22-21 win over the Grizzlies.
Mavericks Come Up Short Against Western Colorado
MANKATO, Minn. – The No. 15 Minnesota State wrestling team fell to No. 23 Western Colorado, 24-19, Saturday afternoon at Taylor Center.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 1-1, while the Mountaineers improve to 2-1 on the year.
The Mavericks fell behind 6-0 after Anthony Heng was pinned in 4:00 by Jason Hanenberg at 141 lbs. An 11-2 major decision win by Kyle Rathman at 149 lbs., closed the deficit to 6-4 after two matches.
At 157 lbs., Cooper Siebrecht defeated Cole Mortensen by an 8-6 decision to give the Mavericks a 7-6 lead. The Mountaineers regained the lead at 9-7 after Michael Thelen secured a 7-4 win over Logan Saltou at 165 lbs.
North Iowa Area Community College sophomore Brock Luthens has committed to wrestle at Minnesota State University Mankato in 2020-2021.
Mankato, Minn. — The Minnesota State wrestling team is rated 15th in the most-recent 2019-20 NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 Poll.
Minnesota State has three individuals ranked at their respective weight classes, including junior Kyle Rathman (Apple Valley, Minn.), who is rated third at 149 lbs. Rathman, who placed seventh at last year’s NCAA DII national championships in earning All-American honors, stands 4-1 for 2019-20.
The NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 and Individual Rankings have been released for January 1, 2020.

Mavericks Overcome Slow Start to Win Dual vs UW-Parkside
MANKATO, Minn. — The No. 8 Minnesota State wrestling team defeated the UW-Parkside Rangers, 20-18, Thursday night at Taylor Center.
With the win. The Mavericks start the 2019-20 season with a 1-0 record, while UW-Parkside falls to 1-1.
The Mavericks fell behind 9-0 after the first two matches in the dual. AT 125 lbs., UWP’s Joe Arroyo won by an 11-1 over MSU’s Trenton McManus. A 20-5 tech fall win for Airk Furseth over Cole Gille at 125 lbs., gave the Rangers a 9-0 lead.
MANKATO, Minn. – Senior Zach Johnston earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week honors after wresting his way to a 5-0 record en route to winning the 174-pound bracket at the Buena Vista Open on Saturday.
