MSU-Mankato 33 Waldorf 6

Mankato, Minn. — The new-look Mavericks took to the mat for the first time Thursday night as they defeated Waldorf 33-6. Of the eight matches it won, Minnesota State recorded a fall and three tech falls en route to the victory. Sophomore Drew Lexvold (141 lbs) set the tone early for MSU by pinning Dillon Spates at 1:40. Lexvold was trailing 0-2 after a Spates takedown at 0:45 before escaping at 0:52, and recording a takedown at 1:30 that eventually led to the fall.

Maverick Grapplers Debut at No. 3 in NSIC Poll

Burnsville, Minn. — The Minnesota State wrestling team received 43 points in the initial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll as announced by conference officials Friday afternoon. Upper Iowa is picked as the preseason favorite, as they garnered 64 points followed by St. Cloud State with 51 points. MSU has three wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the coaches’ poll.

MSU wrestling team reloads, eyes improvement

MANKATO — It takes a lot to get Minnesota State wrestling coach Jim Makovsky excited but when you ask him about his 2012-13 team, he does a lot of smiling.

He’s excited because he believes he has a lot of quality wrestlers who are also good people. “They all want to be here, they all want to work hard, they all want the team to be successful,” he said. Continue reading at
