Minnesota State Wrestling Set to Embark on 2012-13 Campaign

Mankato, Minn. — The Minnesota State University wrestling team enters the 2012-13 season searching for a fresh start as the squad will have 19 new wrestlers, but will find leadership behind two returning All-Americans.

The Mavericks went 5-9 in dual action in 2011-12, were 3-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, earned a ninth-place finish in regional action, and had a pair of underclassmen, David Demo and Cody Quinn, qualify for the NCAA Championship tournament.

Makovsky and Matzek to go ‘On the Mat’ this week

Jim Makovsky and Mark Matzkek will go “On the Mat” this Wednesday, October 10.

Makovsky is his 20th year as the head wrestling coach at Minnesota State-Mankato. He has coached 10 NCAA champions during his tenure.

Matzek is in his fifth year as the head wrestling coach at Augsburg College. He led the Auggies to an NCAA Division III wrestling championship in 2010. He was also a two-time NCAA champion for Augsburg.

DII Winter Championships Festival relocated to Birmingham

The 2013 Division II Winter National Championships Festival has been moved from Cleveland to Birmingham, Ala., because of challenges involving the hotel block in Cleveland.

The Festival – which will feature Division II national championships in men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s indoor track, and wrestling – will be conducted March 3-9, 2013, at Birmingham’s CrossPlex multisport facility. The dates and schedule of events will not be affected by the change of venue. The Gulf South Conference and the City of Birmingham will serve as co-hosts.

Birthday Celebration Set for Rummy Macias

Get-Together for MSU Wrestling Icon Slated for July 28 in Mankato

Mankato, Minn. — Minnesota State coaching legend Rummy Macias is turning 90 this year and a birthday celebration has been scheduled for Saturday, July 28th at the Loose Moose Saloon in Mankato beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Macias, who started the MSU wrestling program in 1950 and coached for 38 years, led MSU to three national titles (NAIA championships in 1958 and 1959 and a NCAA College Division title in 1965), eight Northern Intercollegiate Conference championships, and one North Central Conference title.
