Makovsky Selected for NCAA Division II Hall of Fame

Coach Becomes Eighth Member of Maverick Wrestling Program to Join Elite Group

Mankato, Minn. — The NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association has announced that Minnesota State head coach Jim Makovsky has been selected for induction into its 2013 Hall of Fame.

Makovsky will be officially inducted at a ceremony on Thursday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala. The Division II Hall of Fame Ceremony will be held in conjunction with a reception for coaches and dignitaries on the eve of the 51st annual NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Birmingham.

MSU-Mankato 25, Southwest Minnesota State 9

Mavericks Defeat Mustangs 25-9; Remain Perfect in NSIC

Mankato, Minn. – No. 10 Minnesota State (9-2, 6-0) had three wrestlers record bonus points in a 25-9 victory over Southwest Minnesota State Saturday Night at Taylor Center. Junior David Demo set the tone early with a 15-0 tech fall in the 125-lbs bout.

Maverick Grapplers Re-enter Top-10

Edmond, Okla. — Fresh off of a sweep of ranked NSIC opponents, Minnesota State moved to No. 10 in the latest Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll. MSU defeated Upper Iowa 21-15 and Augustana 21-19 last week. The Peacocks and Vikings were ranked sixth and 19th respectively.

Individually MSU has three wrestlers ranked in their weight class. The trio all went 2-0 last week.

Maverick Grapplers Stay Unbeaten in Conference

Sioux Falls, S.D. — No. 13 Minnesota State took to the road for their first conference dual away from Taylor Center and came away with a 21-19 win over No. 19 Augustana. Early pins by Alphonso Vruno and Drew Lexvold# at 133-lbs and 141-lbs helped spark the Mavericks as they defeated their second ranked opponent in as many duals.

After David Demo lost a 5-3 decision as 125-lbs, Vruno pinned Jeremiah Peterson at 4:57. Lexvold came right back with a pin of Brandon Charbonneau at 1:02 – the sophomore’s second consecutive pin in NSIC action.
