MSUM Announces 2023 Dragon Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead Athletics has announced the 2023 Dragon Athletic Hall of Fame inductees. The individuals and teams selected to be enshrined will be honored on October 13 inside the Comstock Memorial Union Ballroom.

Six individuals and two teams will be inducted into MSUM’s hall of greatness with five individuals being selected into the 2023 class specifically. Standout swimmer Ann (Gusewelle) Meyer, who was a part of the 2022 induction class, will officially be honored alongside the 2023 class on October 13.

“I am very excited to honor these individuals and teams in October as they enter our athletics Hall of Fame,” said MSUM athletic director Chad Markuson. “Each of the six individuals and the two teams selected are still leaving their mark on this department even after their departure as student-athletes. We are excited to honor them as true legends of Dragon athletics.”

Dragon Wrestling’s 12th Annual Golf Outing Scheduled for August 18

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSUM wrestling has announced that its annual golf outing will be played on Friday, August 18 at Frazee Golf Course.

Alumni, friends and golfers alike are welcome to register and play in the 12th annual event which will feature a four-person scramble format. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. on site at Frazee Golf Course. A lunch will be served from noon until 1 p.m. with a shotgun start kicking off the scramble at 1 p.m.

Dragon Wrestling Locks in 2023-24 Slate

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead wrestling has solidified its schedule ahead of the winter 2023-24 season. The Dragons will host seven home duals throughout the year as well as its annual Dragon Open early in the season.

MSUM will begin its year with a pair of open tournaments, first at the Jimmie Open on November 4 and then at the DWU Open on November 11. The Dragons competed at both opens last season. The Kris Nelson-led squad will then host the University of Jamestown on November 16 to open the dual season. Following the battle with the Jimmies, MSUM will compete at the Younes Hospitality Open, hosted by Nebraska-Kearney on November 18. To close out the open slate, MSUM will host the annual Dragon Open on December 3 inside Nemzek Fieldhouse.

Dragon Wrestling Camp Featuring Hayden Zillmer Slated for July 26-28

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead wrestling will host its annual wrestling camp beginning on July 26 with the camp concluding on July 28. Former North Dakota State standout Hayden Zillmer will be the lead clinician for the camp.

Hayden Zillmer was a member of the USA World Team at 125 kg men’s freestyle in 2022. In September of 2022, Zillmer competed in the Senior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. Zillmer had previously made the US Senior National Teams in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. He is from Crosby, Minn., and was an All-American at North Dakota State.

The camp is available for those entering third grade through 12th grade. Wrestlers will develop their skills in folkstyle wrestling, concentrating on the top, bottom, and neutral positions. Continue reading at msumdragons.com →

Dragon’s Boom and Grove Distinguished with NSIC’s Honor Student-Athlete Awards

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — MSU Moorhead’s Peyton Boom (women’s basketball) and Samuel Grove (wrestling) have been named the recipients of the NSIC’s Honor Student-Athlete Award. Two student-athletes from each NSIC member institution are bestowed the honor yearly.

Boom is completing her graduate studies at MSUM in Speech-Language Pathology and has worked for a 3.94 cumulative GPA. The senior standout was also named the NSIC’s Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year for women’s basketball for her efforts on and off the court. Boom was also named to this winter’s NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence and was a CSC Academic All-District selection.

Four Dragons Named NWCA Scholar All-America

MANHEIM, Pa. — MSU Moorhead wrestlers Jonas Anez, Parker Benz, Gunnar Mogen, and Samuel Grove have all been named to the NWCA Scholar All-America team.

In order for a student-athlete to be nominated to the Division II Scholar All-American Team, he must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with that benchmark at 3.25 for those who qualified for the 2023 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships and a 3.0 for those who were All-Americans at the 2023 Nationals. Wrestlers must have competed in four dates of competition.

2023 NWCA Division II Scholar All-America Awards

MANHEIM, PA – For the fifth time in six seasons, the Saints of Maryville University sit atop the NWCA Scholar All-America Team listing for NCAA Division II. In addition, 318 individuals from 57 programs were also honored in the annual awards.

The Saints posted a GPA of 3.487 to top the team listing. Wisconsin-Parkside (3.466); Indianapolis (3.386); West Liberty (3.378) and Northern State (3.372) round out the top five teams.

“We are proud of our team for this,” Saints Head Coach Mike Denney said. “The academic standards at Maryville are high and we want to be a positive force in that. Winning this award shows we are contributing to our campus in that way and I am really just so pleased and proud of our guys.”
