MSUM Closes Season at NCAA Super Region V

MINOT, N.D. – MSU Moorhead was led by wins from redshirt freshmen Cody Wienen and Wayne Mellon at the NCAA Super Region V Tournament.

Cody Wienen helped lift the Dragons in the morning sessions, earning a first-round bye at 157 pounds. While Wienen would fall in his first match of the day to Northern State’s Devin Bahr, he would rally in the consolation bracket. Wienen earned an 8-1 decision over Sioux Falls’ John Tyler to collect a win at the regional. The redshirt freshman would miss out on vying for third place with a loss in his next match.

Wayne Mellon would also get the Dragons a win in the consolation ladder. Mellon would dazzle at 174 pounds against USF’s Ashtin Johnson, winning by a count of 17-0 by the end of the second period. Mellon would conclude his tournament with a loss in his next match.

Dragons Head to Minot for NCAA Super Region V

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead wrestling will travel to Minot, N.D., on Saturday, March 2, for the annual NCAA Super Region V Tournament. Action from the North Dakota State Fairgrounds is set to begin at 9 a.m.

MSUM ended the regular season, falling to Minot State in dual action on February 18. In that dual, Hunter Hayes earned his third straight victory with a technical fall at 3:00. Wayne Mellon collected a win be decision for the Dragons against the Beavers as well.

Bronchos hold top spot in DII Men’s Coaches Poll heading into postseason

MANHEIM, Pa. – Heading into the 2024 postseason, the Central Oklahoma Bronchos are still the top team in NCAA Division II men’s wrestling, according to the latest edition of the National Wrestling Coaches Association DII Men’s poll, released Monday afternoon.

UCO topped the poll with 87 total points behind a poll-high eight ranked wrestlers. The Bronchos, along with #2 Lander, also feature a poll-high two top-ranked wrestlers in defending National Champions Dalton Abney at 197 and Shawn Streck at 285. Lander comes in at #2 with 80 total points and seven ranked wrestlers, highlighted by James Joplin (125) and David Hunsberger (165) at #1 in their respective weight classes.

Augustana made the jump from #14 to #3 in this edition of the poll, amassing 67 total points behind seven ranked individuals. St. Cloud State is in the four-spot with 57 points, with UW-Parkside and McKendree tied in the fifth spot with 48 team points each.
