Dragons set for road tests at Minnesota State and Upper Iowa

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team is on the road this week with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchups. MSUM is at Minnesota State, Mankato for a 7 p.m. dual on Friday, and then is at Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The Dragons are 0-6 on the dual season and 0-5 in the NSIC after losing to top 10 teams Augustana and Parkside last weekend.

Wisconsin-Parkside 31 MSU Moorhead 3

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team got a win by senior Cole Jones but No. 8 Wisconsin-Parkside won the other nine matches in a 31-3 dual win over the Dragons Sunday at Nemzek Fieldhouse.

The Dragons’ last three duals have been against nationally-ranked opponents, and two of their final three will be against ranked teams.

MSUM lost by major decision at 125 to fall behind 4-0 in the dual.

Augustana 29 MSU-Moorhead 12

EAD, Minn. — No. 10 Augustana wrestling defeated MSU Moorhead in an NSIC conference dual on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings saw 8 wrestlers earn victories in the dual. AU moves to 5-3 overall and remains undefeated in NSIC action, one of two undefeated teams in league action.

Freshman Jaxson Rohman started the dual with a fall in the first period. Rohman, competing at 125 pounds, is ranked at No. 4 in the nation for his weight class. The win brings Rohman to 11-1 overall this season.

Brayden Curry, wrestling at 141 pounds, won by way of a 4-2 decision. Curry’s record improves to 5-4 overall this season.

Dragons Host Two Top 10 Teams This Weekend

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team will wrap up its home season this weekend with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference duals. MSUM hosts No. 10 Augustana a 2 p.m. on Saturday and Wisconsin-Parkside at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Sunday is Senior Day for the Dragons.

The Dragons are 0-4 on the dual season and 0-3 in the NSIC after losing to No. 21 ranked Northern State 21-18 last week. Junior Cole Jones pinned his opponent at 133 pounds while sophomore Hunter Hayes won a decision victory at 141 lbs. Senior Braydon Ortloff won a major decision victory at 165.

Northern State 21, MSU-Moorhead 18

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team led 13-10 after six weights, but No. 21 Northern State rallied for a 21-18 dual win over the Dragons in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday in Moorhead.

MSUM fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the NSIC while Northern State improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the league.

The Dragons were down 3-0 after 125 but junior Cole Jones put the Dragons in front with a pin of Northern’s Ty Althoff in 5:46 at 133. That gave the Dragons a 6-3 lead.

NWCA NCAA DII Rankings – January 21, 2022

MANHEIM, Penn.- The Brochos of Central Oklahoma held onto the top spot in NCAA Division II wrestling, in the latest edition of the NWCA Division II Coaches Poll, released Friday, Jan. 21.

Reigning National Champions St. Cloud State are hot on the heels of the Bronchos, however, closing the gap between the top two teams to just three points in this version of the poll. UCO maintained the top spot behind 109 total points from eight ranked wrestlers, while SCSU comes in with 106 points from nine individuals. Nebraska-Kearney moved from the five spot to #3, while West Liberty held at #4. McKendree rounds out the top five, moving from #3 in the previous poll.

Southwest Minnesota State 32, MSU-Moorhead 8

Mustangs tame Dragons for first victory of the season

MOORHEAD, Minn.- The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (1-2, 1-2 NSIC) picked up their first victory in the Chayse Jackson era with a 32-8 victory at MSU Moorhead (0-3, 0-2 NSIC) in the Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn., on Thursday night.

After an MSUM forfeit at 125 pounds, the action started at 133, with Cole Jones leading wire to wire, defeating Hunter Pfantz by major decision to get MSUM on the board with SMSU leading 6-4 through two bouts.

Luke Peterson would extend the Mustang lead at 141, scoring 10 first-period points en route to a 16-0 tech fall victory. Robert Shields kept the momentum rolling, picking up two third-period takedowns to help fuel a 5-3 victory.
