Dragons Prep For Thursday Dual with Mavericks

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead wrestling will return to their home mat this week for a Thursday night dual with Minnesota State. Action begins at 7 p.m. from Nemzek Fieldhouse.

MSUM is coming off a harsh stretch of duals as the Dragons fell to 17th-ranked Augustana, 12th-ranked Upper Iowa, and 24th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State this past weekend. The Dragons were led by 157-pounder Cody Wienen in the dual against the Vikings as he would earn a pinfall victory at 6:12. MSUM’s remaining team points in the dual were scored by Airin Spell, who earned an injury default victory. Against Upper Iowa later in the day, Thomas Carrillo would collect a 2-1 decision win before Jacob Reinardy grabbed a decision win of his own at 165 pounds.

Central Oklahoma tops Division II Men’s Coaches Rankings

MANHEIM, Pa. – Central Oklahoma held onto the top spot in NCAA Division II men’s wrestling and is alone atop the rankings in the latest edition of the National Wrestling Coaches Association DII Men’s poll, released Monday afternoon.

The Bronchos, who have all 10 of their starters individually ranked as well, amassed 93 total points. Lander comes in at #2 with 71 total points behind seven ranked wrestlers, with West Liberty in third with 55 points. UW-Parkside (54 points) and St. Cloud State (52 points) round out the top five.

A pair of top-ranked wrestlers highlight the 10 UCO wrestlers ranked, with both defending champions Dalton Abney (197) and Shawn Streck (285) topping their respective weight classes. Lander also features a pair of No. 1s, in David Hunsberger (165) and newly-named #1 James Joplin at 125. In addition to the 125 and 285 weight classes, there is also a new #1 at 149 in 2023 National Finalist, Christian Small of Lake Erie, while UNC-Pembroke’s Scotty Joll took over the top spot at 174 for the first time this season as well.

Mustangs dominate Dragons for first 30-point NSIC dual in two years

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team defeated the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons by a final score of 30-8 on Sunday afternoon inside the PE gym.

The 30 team points scored by the Mustangs is the most since the 2021-22 season when they defeated MSU Moorhead 32-8.

Carlo Arreola got the Mustangs started off strong, picking up a 17-9 major decision victory over Hunter Heim to begin the dual.

MSUM Falls in Pair of Duals to Nationally-Ranked Foes

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – MSU Moorhead wrestling fell in a pair of duals on Saturday afternoon to 17th-ranked Augustana and 12th-ranked Upper Iowa. Both duals took place on Augustana’s campus in Sioux Falls.

In the first dual of the day, MSUM fell 34-12 to the Vikings on their home mat. The Dragons would drop the first four matches of the dual before Cody Wienen stepped to the mat. The redshirt freshman entered the third period trailing Augustana’s Connor Simmonds, 9-2. However, Wienen showcased that just about anything can happen in a wrestling match as the Thief River Falls, Minn., native stuck Simmonds at 6:12. Wienen’s pinfall victory provided six team points for the Dragons as it was Wienen’s fourth pin of the year.

To close the dual, heavyweight Airin Spell would earn his first win of the season after defeating Augie’s Edward Hajas by injury default at 4:24. In extra match action, Will Price won his 184-pound bout over Gavin Gulbranson, 3-2. The Vikings took the dual 34-12.

Trio of Duals on Deck for Dragon Wrestling

MOORHEAD, Minn. — MSU Moorhead wrestling will take to the road this weekend for a trio of duals against nationally-ranked competition. The Dragons take on 17th-ranked Augustana and 12th-ranked Upper Iowa on Saturday before scrapping against 24th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday.

Live video and results will be available at msumdragons.com. Action on Saturday begins at 2 p.m. against the Vikings, followed by the dual with the Peacocks at 4 p.m. MSUM and SMSU will dual at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
